121: The Origins & History of the Enneagram -The Crib Notes Version

from The Enneagram Edge with Host Tracy O’Malley · host Tracy O'Malley

I get a lot of questions about the history and origins of the Enneagram⁣⁣...and if you know me, I’m a bottom-line-me kind of girl, and I really don’t care. I hated history in school.⁣⁣⁣Listen now⁣⁣⁣It’s ironic because what I love about the Enneagram is it can help us connect the dots—which is essentially looking at our own history⁣⁣I have to see how something’s going to work for me and be bought into it before I study its history. For me, it’s great you can tell me where something comes from, but can you tell me how to use it? This is one reason my specialty within the Enneagram practice is integration.⁣⁣I’ve now used the Enneagram in all parts of my life for a decade⁣⁣Now that I’m all-in, I’ve decided to take the time to understand the history of the Enneagram. So today, I share with you its history and origins.⁣⁣Ennea means nine and gram means model⁣⁣It has Greek roots, but the Enneagram’s origins are disputed. It’s connected to spiritual, mathematical, philosophical and psychological traditions.⁣⁣Some authors believe it has connections with esoteric Christianity⁣⁣Some believe the Enneagram symbol can be traced to the sacred geometry of Pythagorean mathematicians and mystical mathematics. Others talk of nine divine qualities that manifest in human nature.⁣⁣Want to learn more? Listen now...⁣Quotes:1:41 It’s great that you can tell me where the Enneagram comes from but can you tell me how to use it?4:40 Some of the basics of the history and the origins of the enneagram, it has Greek roots. Enneagram means 9, like I said ennea is the 9 the gram is model points. 5:29 I like to say the Enneagram is part psychology, part spirituality, & how we as children learn to cope- it’s nature and nurture. 6:08 Some authors claim strong roots while others point to connections to some early Christianity. 9:28 The 21st Century enneagram, the more recent evolution of the enneagram in the form and shape that is known in the 21st century is much clearer. 10:34 Your type is not just a label that you get and you stay there and you are those stereotypes. 12:43When I can kinda bring the enneagram information with the application and practical parts of it that’s where I find the secret sauce with all of you. 13:47 There’s all fun/different parts of the enneagram that I will continue to get into with you. 15:30 The enneagram when used properly and when it’s integrated into your life and you approach it for the greatest good to bring out the best in those you lead and love including and especially yourself. 16:03 There’s a lot of history in all of us and the enneagram is no different.
