122. The Tightrope

from One Bold Move A Day · host Shanna Hocking

As a senior executive, I have been through a lot on my way to the top. I’m sure you have stories, too. Women have learned to navigate the work world by tempering their reactions, negotiations, and opinions in order to achieve their goals. It’s the tightrope women have to walk, and it’s a difficult path. Though women shouldn’t have to behave in this way, it’s a reality that unconscious bias exists everywhere, and it silently affects women’s abilities to get ahead. If you’re experiencing this as a working woman, remember you’re not alone, even when it feels like you are. You can position yourself for success by understanding what you face and creating a network to support you. For our organizations, and our male allies, it is time to challenge the biases that require women to behave this way. This episode provides strategies to keep in mind to help you be successful as you walk the tightrope while we commit to seeking changes at the organizational level. Your One Bold Move: This is about what works for women at work, but most importantly what works for you. Organizational change will take time. You can start these strategies today.
