Also known as Prem Parkash Khannvi, he was born in Nawanshahar and worked as a farmer, teacher, editor, and translator before editing an Urdu newspaper in Jalandhar and later working as a sub-editor for Hind Samachar. In 1970 he co-founded the literary magazine Lakeer with Surjit Hans. His work centered on social and sexual taboos, and his controversial novel Dastavez, about the Naxalite movement in Punjab, appeared in 1973.
