The joint research project of RITCS - School of Arts, Brussels and SADA - Stockholm, focusses on these changes and how practitioners dealt with them. The practice based approach, research by doing, is derived from the day to day research that is done in every theatre company when developing new techniques or effects. The goal is to develop useful insights for the contemporary practice. In this lecture we give an overview of the most important changes in lighting technology and the way they were implemented in theatre practice. The focus on the change processes and the issues and failures that came with them will throw a different light on contemporary and future challenges in changing technology. It will show the importance of understanding our heritage and history for the new innovative practice. Fundamentally, the history of lighting is about taking control over light as a physical phenomenon. It is the path from “turning on the light” towards “designing light”. It is about making magic with an untouchable element.” Chris Van Goethem Lecturer: Chris Van Goethem teaches at the stage management and technical theatre department of RITCS (EHB), Sabbattini Antwerp en Marotech Oujda (Marokko).
