最开始的几届是没有火炬的，直到1928年荷兰奥运第一次在开幕式上点燃了火炬，这一形式也被以后的奥运会承袭下来1936年柏林奥运首创了火炬接力仪式。于此类似，奥运会的程序也是在不断发展变化的，比如1968年奥运增加了裁判员宣誓。2012年伦敦奥运会增加教练员宣誓。
