14: Don't Die

from Into the Blue · host Robby Thomas

In a yard behind a workshop, far to the south, a boy is learning to fight — and losing, every time, to the same face. Not his sparring partner's. Mary's. She arrives between his fist and the world at the worst possible moment, every day, and Albert has a diagnosis he delivers like a measurement: she should be the reason your hand closes. Not the thing standing in front of it. Then dinner, and the truest thing Jonah has said all week: no matter how hard he fights for her, he knows how it ends. He doesn't want to be a hero. He just wants everything back the way it was. And Albert sets down his spoon and tells him the one thing nobody else will: nothing is going back. You have to want the change, or none of this works. Two hundred miles north, the last city on earth lights up white. Zach sees it from a refugee-floor window — a line of fire drawn with a ruler up the middle of Sangara — and then the sky fills with the sound he's never stopped listening for. The stampede goes down; Hew calls them up, to a top floor that was never on any aid announcement, where the scientists keep their own way out. One cramped pod. One quiet promise. Two pulls of a handle stenciled EMERGENCY PARACHUTE in the tidy lettering of a saner century. And in the little cabin in the south, while the horizon burns a color nobody is awake to see, Sarah sits by Jonah's bed and finally tells him about Thomas — and gives him the only blessing she has: Mary's lucky to have you. I know you'll save her. At dawn, Albert's hands aren't steady. The gear stands open like a doorway. Sarah puts her arms around the armor and says the only thing left to say.
