Epizoda o lesích s Matějem Šaškem by se dala považovat za takovou malou případovou studii, jak na konkrétního vlastníka lesa dnes dopadá kůrovcová kalamita. Matěj přišel v posledních letech o 80 ha lesa a v současnosti plánuje a postupně realizuje jeho obnovu. Povídali jsme si s ním o tom, co vlastně v tomto kontextu práce v lese obnáší a na jaké překážky přitom lesník naráží. Dostali jsme se také k tématu financí a počítali, na kolik taková obnova lesa vyjde, kolik peněz les svému majiteli přinese, jak je to s dotacemi a další otázky.  Můžete se těšit na rozhovor „od stolu“ i na živé nahrávky přímo z terénu. Lesní porosty pokrývají v České republice 36,8 % území. Lesy hrají z hlediska změn klimatu významnou roli, v Česku navíc patří také k nejviditelnějším příkladům dopadů těchto změn. Pokud jsou lesy zdravé, pohlcují stromy díky svému růstu oxid uhličitý z atmosféry a vážou jej ve dřevě, nemalé množství CO2 je pak vázáno iv lesní půdě. Takto ještě donedávna české lesy pohlcovaly množství CO2, které odpovídalo zhruba 5 % celkových českých emisí skleníkových plynů. Vlivem kůrovcové kalamity a s ní spojené těžby se však lesy v posledních letech naopak staly nemalým zdrojem emisí, protože z mrtvého dřeva se CO2 uvolňuje a ani půda na pasekách jej už nedokáže mnoho zadržet (nemluvě o množství kůrovcového dříví, které je spáleno, protože jej už nelze využít jinak).
