167. Dr. Jackie Kamradt: Being A Mom is the Best Thing for My OCD

from Tend HER Wild Podcast

In today’s episode we interview Dr. Jackie, a psychologist who has learned the power of self-disclosure when she began to speak openly about her relationship to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that has been present since she was a child.  Dr. Jackie brings both her personal experience as well as her professional knowledge to shed light on this disorder that impacts about 1-3% of the population. Today we discuss: How Jackie doesn’t remember a time before she had OCD, and has been managing it essentially her entire life. The amount of time Jackie spent on compulsions as a child, and the breakthrough that happened at age 12 when she saw her first psychologist and finally had a name for what she was experiencing as well as hope. The powerful message that Jackie conveys not only for people with OCD but for all humans:  you have to face the pain, difficulty and discomfort and sit with it instead of engage in behaviors that block it or lessen it.  Exposure to discomfort and learning to tolerate hard stuff it is the cornerstone of good therapy. Jackie’s new life as a mom, and how this has brought many of her OCD symptoms front and center, but how she can witness and see the symptoms and actually even thank them for trying to protect her before “putting it in its place”.
