Tend HER Wild Podcast

Dr. Betsy Rippentrop, a psychologist, and Kate Moreland, a lawyer and CEO, are having conversations about how women have been conditioned to lose connection to their inner voice and natural instincts, and how the time has come for us to re-wild. Both grew up as overachievers and perfectionists and took traditional career paths, following the rules society set for success. This required a loss of authenticity and a disconnection to their own wild essence. We explore questions and tools around how best to listen to our inner voice, re-wild ourselves, and live the most authentic life, where we thrive instead of survive.

    207. Shannon Algeo: The Power In Your Hands

In today’s episode we welcome back psychotherapist and thought leader Shannon Algeo for his second visit to the podcast. We explore Shannon’s new book, “The Power in Your Hands” about our relationship to our smart phones and his quest to liberate himself from his own attachment to technology. We talk about: How nature, biking, and music all shaped Shannon’s early years and how they continue to nourish his soul when he feels the despair of digitization. When Shannon found himself in his early twenties as an influencer getting thousands of followers and likes, and the light and the shadow of this experience. His personal reckoning with the attachment to his phone and how he faced his own compulsive tendencies around this. The research about people’s attachment style and how they relate to their phone. Several stories about his time in France while writing this book (one with the Mona Lisa) that revealed to him society’s relationship to their phones and the anger he felt. The experiments he has done about going offline, including what he calls the “Sacred Slow” digital fast, that have changed his relationship to technology and to life. 206. A Fresh Take on Perfectionism

What if perfectionism isn’t something we need to overcome—but something we need to understand differently? In this episode of Tend HER Wild, we explore perfectionism through a new lens. Rather than viewing it as a flaw to fix, we discuss the difference between healthy striving and the forms of perfectionism that keep us disconnected from our authentic selves. We share our own stories of perfectionism, examine how culture shapes our expectations, and explore why perfectionism is often less about achievement and more about managing anxiety and seeking safety.  In todays episode we draw on the work of Brené Brown, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and Marion Woodman, and we unpack: The difference between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism Why high standards aren’t the problem The role of the inner critic How perfectionism impacts women, creativity, and leadership The connection between perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, and depression Why socially prescribed perfectionism may be the most harmful form How perfectionism can keep us from creating the life we’re longing for As Clarissa Pinkola Estés reminds us, we don’t need perfect strength—we need adequate strength to be ourselves. Sometimes 75% is enough. A flower doesn’t need to be fully open to be blooming. If you’ve been feeling disconnected from yourself, navigating burnout or grief, constantly over-performing, or longing for a more authentic and intuitive life, this conversation is for you. 204. Toxic Relationships: We’ve All Been There

In today’s episode we explore toxic relationships. We’ve all had them whether they are with partners, friends, social media, food, substances, or even our government.  We seek to understand the hallmarks of them, what to do about it once you see the truth, why we get in them in the first place, and the parts of self we need to own that might be attracting in such relationships. We talk about: Toxic behaviors and the signs that we are definitely caught in a toxic relationship. Why we are drawn to them, and why they are so confusing. Do we break up or let it fade away? The work we may need to do to understand the patterns that allow such toxicity into our life. Dr Clarissa Pinkola Este’s take on how to fend off toxic ideas, people and groups using the symbolism of the butterfly. 203. Annalise Nelson — An Honest Reflection of a Mother’s Grief

In this deeply intimate conversation, we sit down with Annalise Nelson as she shares her story of motherhood, identity, loss, and rebuilding life after the death of her 7-year-old daughter, Ann-Marie. Now parenting a newborn son, Leo, Annalise reflects on how grief has reshaped everything she thought she knew about love, time, and meaning—while also revealing unexpected moments of beauty, connection, and grace. Annalise begins by sharing her early life in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, growing up as the youngest of four children in a home led by a strong single mother after the loss of her father. She reflects on how her mother modeled resilience, independence, and the importance of community—values that deeply shaped her path into teaching and later motherhood. She speaks candidly about the sudden medical crisis that led to Ann-Marie’s passing, and the devastating yet clarifying experience of receiving answers in the hospital. In the midst of unimaginable grief, she describes holding multiple truths at once: heartbreak, gratitude for medical staff, and a strange sense of grounding in understanding what had happened. A central thread of the conversation is how community carried her: Friends, neighbors, and even strangers showed up in profound ways An 8.5-hour visitation revealed the depth of collective love Small gestures—like a stranger giving her a purple stone—became symbols of care A lifelong mentor reminded her: “The reason it hurts so much is because there’s so much love.” We explore how grief is not something to “get over,” but something that reshapes identity. Annalise reflects on: Learning that grief is love with nowhere to go How time becomes nonlinear after loss The importance of letting grief move through the body rather than avoiding it How she and her husband grieved differently, yet both authentically The role of writing, walking, and trusted relationships in processing pain She shares deeply personal and beautiful ways she continues to honor Ann-Marie: Weekly writing with a local writer to preserve memories Designing a headstone that reflects her daughter’s artistic, joyful spirit A cartwheeling mermaid with fishnet tights—symbolizing her daughter’s wild authenticity Continuing traditions like birthday celebrations even after loss Receiving unexpected signs and meaning in everyday life Annalise also reflects on becoming a mother again through IVF and the arrival of baby Leo. She shares the emotional synchronicities surrounding his conception and birth, and how his name—Leo—feels connected to Ann-Marie in meaningful, symbolic ways. Rather than replacing grief, this new life exists alongside it. At the heart of the conversation is a powerful truth: You can hold joy and sorrow at the same time Life does not require choosing one or the other Healing is not linear, but deeply relational and embodied Love does not end—it changes form She closes with a reflection on what it means to live fully human: Those who struggle most are often those who resist holding multiple truths Beauty and tragedy will always coexist in a full life Feeling joy fully is just as important as allowing grief in This episode is a tender exploration of love, loss, and the enduring connection between a mother and her daughter—an invitation to stay open to the fullness of life, even when it hurts. 202. The Severing of the Wild Woman

What severs women from their wild, instinctual selves? Or maybe the better question is: when did we become disconnected in the first place? In this episode, we explore the concept of “Wild Severance” — the gradual disconnection many women experience from their intuition, instincts, bodies, power, and truth. Inspired by the work of Clarissa Pinkola Estés, we unpack the systems, experiences, and conditioning that teach women to override themselves in order to belong, perform, and stay safe. We talk about the subtle and overt ways women are taught to disconnect from their natural essence — and what it means to begin rewilding ourselves back into wholeness. In This Episode We Discuss: How patriarchal systems condition women to perform rather than trust themselves Kate’s early experience interviewing for a law job and being told not to wear her wedding ring Betsy’s story of religious conditioning that taught her the body was sinful and untrustworthy The lasting impact of Victoria’s Secret and cultural messaging around women’s bodies Why systems of control benefit when women are disconnected from community, intuition, and each other The tension many women felt around taking their husband’s last name — and ignoring the instinct that questioned it How trauma disconnects women from instinct and intuition Dr. Estés’ insight that wounded women can become more vulnerable to promises of safety, ease, and approval Betsy’s story of early trauma and how it severed her connection to herself The danger of teaching girls to always “be nice” Why compliance and people-pleasing often require women to override their intuition The truth that a mother wolf would never teach her cubs to ignore danger signals Teaching daughters to trust themselves instead of abandoning themselves for approval Dr. Estés’ question: “Why do women keep bending and folding themselves into shapes that aren’t theirs?” The fear many women have of their own power Betsy’s retreat experience of standing fully in her power — and how terrifying that felt Why fear itself isn’t the problem unless it stops us from using our gifts in the world Spring and summer as natural seasons for rewilding and reconnection Key Takeaway Rewilding begins with awareness. The first step is acknowledging where you have been severed from yourself — your body, intuition, instincts, voice, desires, or power. From there, healing becomes a return. Not becoming someone new, but remembering who you were before the disconnection. 200. The Stories That Changed Us — Celebrating 200 Episodes of Tend HER Wild

It’s hard to fathom that this podcast has lasted this long — and even more incredible that the energy surrounding it only seems to be getting stronger. What continues to emerge through these conversations is a deep collective longing: to understand ourselves more fully, to reclaim forgotten parts of ourselves, and to return to something ancient and true. Again and again, we find ourselves circling back to the essence of the Wild Woman archetype — woman’s deepest nature. In a culture where the modern woman is often a blur of activity, pressured to be everything to everyone, these conversations remind us that the old knowing is long overdue. The episodes and guests below left a lasting imprint on us — conversations that challenged us, expanded us, comforted us, and called us closer to ourselves. Highlights for Kate & Betsy Episode 172 — Sarah Goettsch Sarah is a fierce advocate for social justice and an unapologetic ally of the LGBTQIA+ community. She brings both fire and empathy to her ministry, shaped by resilience, courage, and a deep commitment to those on the margins. Her story of navigating divorce as a pastor — while feeling the judgment of her congregation — was deeply impactful. She spoke openly about people harmed by religion and shared that her husband is an atheist, emphasizing that faith is deeply personal: it is between us and our God.  Her willingness to “go to the edge” challenged us to rethink the role of church and organized religion. She reminded us that while traditional religion may not be necessary for everyone, spiritual wrestling — with love, existence, meaning, and eternity — still matters profoundly. Highlights for Betsy Sasha Boros — Episode 29 Sasha spoke about no longer sacrificing connection to herself. She described feeling something within her urging her forward — pushing her toward change, even when it felt terrifying. One of the most memorable reflections: “The Universe will push you to the edge of the cliff and encourage you to jump.” Her honesty about standing in the free fall — where life feels exciting, terrifying, hopeful, and unknown all at once — captured something many women quietly experience when stepping into authenticity. Lyz Lenz — Episode 103 Lyz’s unapologetic honesty left a profound impression. She spoke about the foundation of Western marriage as a political institution — one historically rooted in inequality rather than happiness. She shared how many women believe they are the problem inside unhappy marriages, and how it takes radical imagination to envision entirely different ways of loving and living. Her reflections on freedom were unforgettable. Nina Lohman — Episode 122 Nina’s story carried tenderness and deep respect. One moment especially stayed with us: “We are going to have two houses now. We’re going to be one of those families that has two houses now.” Her approach modeled dignity, compassion, and care even through enormous life transitions. Highlight for Kate Episode 173 — Maddie Corman — Accidentally Brave Hearing Maddie’s personal story — and the resistance she faced trying to get her project picked up — was incredibly powerful. She spoke about how betrayal stories where women stay are rarely told. The cultural narrative often only makes room for women who leave dramatically. Because of that, many women navigating complicated realities feel isolated and unsupported. Her work created space for those untold stories. Highlight for Betsy Episode 154 — Kristin Hanggi Betsy reflected on the synchronicity and fate surrounding Kristin’s entrance into her studio and life. Their conversation explored creativity, the heroine’s journey, and the deep spiritual dimensions of artistic work. Highlight for Kate  Episode 186 — Live Podcast Event with Dani Worrell This live event explored how connection with loved ones does not necessarily end after death, and how remaining open to signs and synchronicities can keep that connection alive. Witnessing women receive messages that deeply moved them — and seeing tears, healing, and relief in the room — was unforgettable. Ren Stinson — Episode 188 Ren’s wisdom around masculinity deeply resonated. He shared stories from his first ten years growing up in Japan and explained the meaning behind his name, Ren, meaning “Lotus.” His mother intentionally chose the name despite resistance, eventually helping normalize it in Japanese culture. Rather than redefining masculinity, Ren speaks about expanding it: giving men permission to feel, modeling emotional honesty, supporting vulnerability, and encouraging men to live beyond restrictive norms. His perspective felt both grounded and hopeful. Highlights for Betsy  Episode 180 — Ginette Biro Ginette’s story about hearing a voice say: “Ginette, look down the hall.” —and then seeing her cat staring at a spirit guide — left a profound impression. Her discussion of the “blueprint” theory — that our lives hold certain destined experiences and turning points — opened a conversation about fate, guidance, and spiritual design. Episodes 16 & 94 — Marianne Williamson Having Marianne on the podcast twice was deeply meaningful. Beyond her public image — author, activist, presidential candidate — what stood out most was her humanity. Petite in stature, yet carrying enormous fire, fearlessness, and conviction. Her words about women, power, and courage continue to echo: “Nothing is more of a trigger to the patriarchy than a confident woman.” She challenged women to confront the ways we silence ourselves out of fear of rejection or disapproval. She spoke about moral outrage not as hatred, but as love in action. Her reminder was clear: There is a fierceness required of women now. And the goddess is fierce. Episode 187 — Love and Solidarity: Stories from Minneapolis This conversation explored what it means to embody the Wild Woman archetype during times of collective pain and uncertainty. The episode held heartbreak and humanity together at once: courage in real time, love under pressure, grief, community care, and women choosing presence over paralysis. Inspired by the teachings of Clarissa Pinkola Estés, the conversation reflected on how cultures heal — and what becomes possible when communities become “a family within a family,” tending one another through fear and fierce love. 199. Jaime Ehrenberg: Listen to the Land

In today’s episode we speak with Jaime Ehrenberg, an intuitive and spiritual guide whose gift is listening to and communicating with the land.  We have an eye opening conversation about what we can all do to energetically care for our own back yard, and the healing that can ripple out when we do this. We talk about: Jaime’s early years being raised by a single Dad, her draw toward environmentalism and education, and the winding career path that led her to what she is now doing. When Jaime and Betsy met at a rewilding retreat in Spain, and Betsy’s first impression of Jaime. How the retreat in Spain unlocked a new awareness in Jaime that she was meant to intuitively work with the land. The 80 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains that Jaime and her husband Christina bought that they named Idylwild, and their plans to create a healing retreat/temple space. The way the land first began to speak to Jaime, and it’s revelatory message that it needed Jaime’s help to clear the toxic masculine energy on the land from the years of extraction and misuse by previous owners. What Jaime has learned about communing with the land, and how one of the most powerful things we can do is to look at everything, notice all the details of nature and speak to the land about the beauty you observe. Bio: Jaime Ehrenberg is an Intuitive, Embodiment & Spiritual guide trained as a priestess, reiki, and embodiment coach. Her work bridges somatic awareness, intuitive guidance, and energetic attunement—creating a sacred space where body, mind, and spirit can come into coherence. 198. Juliana Hauser: We Are All Sexual Beings

In today’s episode we speak with Dr. Juliana Hauser whose work is about holistic sexuality.  She talks today about how sex saved her life multiple times, and the importance of understanding how sexuality is intricately connected to all areas of our life.  We loved how Dr. Juliana balances openness and vulnerability with grounded theory and research.  We definitely learned new things in this conversation! We talk about: Dr Juliana’s childhood as a wild, free spirited child who loved to hang from trees that then shifted in middle school when she began to follow rules and move toward achievement. Her short stint as an actress in LA and the seminal moment when she had to seduce someone in an acting class that revealed to her the disconnect she had with her own sexuality and a newfound drive to understand this. How our culture fears sexually confident women. The 9 pillars of holistic sexuality that Dr Juliana created through her research and the importance of exploring who you are as a sexual being. The pillar of pleasure, using our 5 senses, our fears of pleasure and why she talks about self-pleasure vs masturbation. The pillar of desire, and how desire, or vitality as she often defines it, can often came back even when we think it is completely gone in our lives. Bio: Dr Juliana Hauser is a licensed marriage and family therapist and has a Phd in Counseling Education.  Her mission is to connect people with their essence – their truest self – through uncovering, demystifying, and reclaiming their unique sexuality. She is here to evolve sexual education so we can enter the final frontier of personal development.  Her recent book, “A New Position on Sex: A Guide to Greater Sexual Confidence, Pleasure and Authenticity” has been called “a liberating and evidence-informed path forward” and a “must read for anyone longing to bring more truth, vitality, and presence into the erotic life”. Today we explore the concept of the inner child, or the parts of self from childhood that may be subconsciously influencing our life as an adult.  The inner child carries both positive traits like creativity and playfulness, as well as negative unresolved traumas, fears, or unmet needs.  Today’s conversation ends with a guided inner child exercise with Dr. Betsy. What We Cover in This Episode: The common question of why dredge up memories or feelings from childhood when it is in the past. Whether it is necessary to work with inner child if you have few memories from that time period or if you had a “relatively” happy childhood. The major signs that your inner child is in the driver’s seat. The 7 inner child archetypes: The Caretaker, The Overachiever, The Underachiever, The Rescuer/Protector, The Life of the Party, The Yes Person, The Hero Worshipper. A tool for reparenting yourself. A guided inner child exploration with Dr. Betsy to help you observe and understand your inner child pattern. 196. Seasoned Wisdom Live

In this special live episode of the Tend HER Wild Podcast, recorded at the James Theatre with the Water Bearer Collective, four remarkable women share stories and insights gathered across decades of life. Together they reflect on courage, friendship, aging, and the power of crone wisdom—showing how experience deepens our capacity to lead, love, and keep evolving. Guests Marcia Akin – Educator and Psychotherapist Connie Benton Wolfe – Social Entrepreneur and Innovative Leader Peg Burke – Former University of Iowa professor and former president of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Lark Birdsong – First women’s basketball coach at the University of Iowa, leader, artist, and lifelong learner Marcia Akin & Connie Benton Wolfe Early Years & Self-Discovery Both Marcia and Connie describe themselves as shy girls who eventually stepped beyond their comfort zones to share their gifts. Marcia reflects on the influence of strong Quaker women and pursuing advanced degrees in education and social work. Connie recalls being excluded from a school play because of her shyness, but credits her grandmother’s encouragement to trust herself and stay open to life’s unfolding path. Courage Marcia shares how her colon cancer diagnosis at 49—after losing her father to the same disease—revealed the strength of family and community support. Connie believes courage begins with trusting your gifts and allowing them to be visible, noting that courage grows when women support one another. Love & Friendship Both women emphasize the importance of lifelong women’s friendships. Marcia speaks about the grounding power of love and humor, while Connie offers simple wisdom: never abandon your women friends for a partner. Aging & Wisdom Marcia reflects that turning 80 has deepened her self-understanding and reminds us that growth never stops. Connie, who spent much of her career working in aging communities, continues to advocate for dignity and meaningful engagement for older adults. Rapid Reflections One truth about life: Marcia – Love relentlessly. | Connie – Start fresh every day. Stop worrying about: Marcia – Tomorrow. | Connie – Naysayers. Start doing earlier: Marcia – Listen to your body. | Connie – Understand money. Lark moved frequently during childhood and grew up adventurous and energetic. Pioneers in Women’s Sports Peg discovered physical education in college after receiving a small scholarship—an opportunity that shaped her lifelong advocacy for women in athletics. Lark was recruited by pioneering athletic director Christine Grant to help coach the first women’s basketball team at the University of Iowa, where early teams had no uniforms or locker rooms. Courage & Justice Peg shares how witnessing inequality in women’s sports fueled her activism, emphasizing that once you see injustice, you cannot ignore it. Lark describes courage through personal challenges like adopting her daughter from Peru and completing endurance cycling events such as Race Across America. Friendship & Collective Power Peg describes women’s friendships as “a fire with three logs—it burns stronger together.” Lifelong collaboration among women leaders helped expand opportunities for future generations. Rapid Reflections One truth about life: Peg – Life is full of surprises. | Lark – Align what you think, say, and do. 195. Radical Wellness with Sarah Van Cleve

Sarah Van Cleve is a somatic practitioner, facilitator, death doula, mother, gardener, devoted life-lover, and future ancestor. She is the founder of Soul House Wellness, where she weaves together yoga, sound healing, somatic practice, and leadership development to support people in reconnecting with their bodies and their truth. A self-described Black radical and professional agitator, Sarah’s work is rooted in a deep commitment to social justice, accessibility, and the kind of healing that tells the truth. Through her work, she creates spaces where people can find safety within themselves, tend to what is honest, and practice more courageous ways of being in community. In this conversation, Sarah shares how her early life experiences shaped her understanding of identity, belonging, and community. Adopted and raised as a biracial child in a loving white family and predominantly white environment, she reflects on the complexities of navigating identity, proximity to whiteness, and the ways those experiences and micro aggression shaped her path toward embodied healing and justice-centered wellness work. Sarah also speaks about the importance of creating intentional spaces for people of color in wellness, including her work with Return (formerly Yoga for People of Color), and why race, power, and community must be part of the conversation if healing spaces are to be truly inclusive. Together, we explore what wellness spaces often miss, the ongoing practice of unlearning, and what it means to build communities that are brave enough to tell the truth. In this episode we discuss: How adoption shaped Sarah’s understanding of identity, belonging, loss, and connection Growing up biracial in a predominantly white family and community Her reunion with her 8 biological siblings The difference between safety and belonging in wellness spaces Why Sarah created healing spaces specifically for people of color What wellness culture often misses when it ignores race, community, and power The role of somatic practice in healing and embodied leadership What Sarah, Betsy and Kate are currently unlearning in their lives and work This conversation invites us to consider how healing is not only personal, but collective—and how creating spaces rooted in honesty, embodiment, and justice can open the door to deeper belonging for all. 193. Healing Through Ketamine Therapy with Megan Carnahan

In this deeply honest and expansive conversation, Megan shares her journey from a highly sensitive child who learned to shut parts of herself down—to a therapist helping others reconnect with their inner intelligence for healing. We explore how early life experiences shaped her path, the moment yoga reawakened her sensitivity, and how her work has evolved to include innovative therapeutic modalities like ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. This episode offers a grounded, nuanced look at both the promise and responsibility of working with ketamine in mental health care—along with powerful reflections on healing, integration, and the wisdom within. What We Cover in This Episode: Megan’s early years as a highly sensitive child—and how she learned to suppress parts of herself Her role as a “conflict manager” in childhood and early signs of becoming a therapist How yoga,  years ago, reawakened her emotional and intuitive sensitivity Her path into becoming a therapist and how her practice has evolved The integration of ketamine into her psychotherapeutic work Ketamine & Mental Health: How ketamine is used therapeutically to treat depression and other mental health challenges The science behind ketamine—how it opens new neural pathways in the brain Its historical use as an anesthetic, particularly in reducing anxiety and suppressing memory Megan’s personal experience using ketamine as part of her own healing and spiritual exploration A Thoughtful Approach to Ketamine Therapy: Why psychotherapy-led ketamine work is essential (vs. clinic-only experiences) The importance of support, intention, and integration in the healing process How ketamine can help people reconnect with their inner intelligence Important Considerations & Risks: The dangers of unmonitored or improperly guided ketamine use Who may not be a good candidate (including those with high blood pressure or a family history of bipolar disorder due to potential manic activation) Why ketamine is not a “magic bullet,” but one tool within a broader healing journey Healing doesn’t come from outside of us—it comes from reconnecting with what’s already within. With the right support, intention, and care, powerful tools like ketamine can help illuminate that path. Other Episodes: Hypnosis episode (Ep. 72) Unraveling to Heal (Ep. 164 Are You Dysregulated? 191. Our Favorite Quotes (and Why They Matter)

Words have a way of finding us exactly when we need them. In this episode, we share 22 quotes that have inspired, grounded, and guided us through different seasons of life. This conversation was sparked by a listener who asked us: What are the quotes you return to again and again? So we gathered the words that have stayed with us—and the meaning behind them. We’d love to know: what quotes have shaped your life? Quotes: “The women I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because shit worked out. They got that way because shit went wrong and they handled it. They handled it a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes.” -Elizabeth Gilbert “The more scared we are of a work or calling , the more sure we can be that we have to do it.  Resistance is experienced as fear. The degree of fear equates to the strength of resistance.  Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise the more certain we can be that  enterprise is important to us and the growth of our soul. “ Stephen Pressfield from “War of Art” “The wound is the place where the light enters you. “ Rumi “Love is the most powerful force in the world. If people tell you the opposite of love is fear, it is not so. Love just is. Love has no opposite, it’s the answer to everything, everything. Where there is disharmony, wherever there’s pain, whoever there’s hunger or wherever there is sorrow. Just send love. Not only to humanity, but to all of life. To the rivers, the oceans, the forest, to the animals the birds, the bees to air you breathe. To the whole cosmos because you are part of the one, we are all part of the one. There is no separation. “ -Delores Cannon “Let your heart break, so your spirit doesn’t.” – Andrea Gibson “Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act , just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.”   -Rainer Maria Rilke “Letters to a Young Poet” “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you do, but they will never forget the way you made them feel”. Maya Angelou “To strive for perfection is to kill love, because perfection does not recognize humanity.”  -Marianne Woodman “How to do the thing you are afraid to do. Grab fears by the hand, grab hope by the hand and start walking.” -Cleo Wade “Nothing has as strong of influence psychologically on your environment, and especially on your children, than the un-lived life of the parent.”  Carl Yung “Of course I’ve changed darling, I’ve grown.” -Cleo Wade “Aging is no accident. It is necessary to the human condition, intended by the soul. We become more characteristic of who we are simply by lasting into later years; the older we become, the more our true natures emerge. Thus the final years have a very important purpose: the fulfillment and confirmation of one’s character.” – James Hillman “You are the sky, everything else is the weather.” – Pema “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I’m only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? -Hillel “The best thing to hold onto in life, is each other.” – Audrey Hepburn “Your new life is going to cost you your old one. It’s going to cost you your comfort zone and your sense of direction. It’s going to cost you relationships and friends. It’s going to cost you being liked and understood. It doesn’t matter. The people who are meant for you are going to meet you on the other side. You’re going to build a new comfort zone around the things that actually move you forward. Instead of being liked, you’re going to be loved. Instead of being understood, you’re going to be seen. All you’re going to lose is what was built for a person you no longer are.” – Brianna Wiest “I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” – Audrey Hepburn “She knows that she’ll get her butt kicked if she chooses aliveness , her light will blind others, her darkness will not let her fit in, her success will provoke conflict, her ways of healing will be judged, her enemies will want her to cower, and fear will do it’s best to take her down. So she draws a circle around herself and keeps opening up, because aliveness is freedom. She’s embracing the risk to bypass the ordinary and she’s exactly what the world needs right now.” -Tanya Markul She Book  “Strong back, soft front, wild heart.” – Joan Hallifax / Brene’ Brown Past Episodes You Might Like with Kate & Betsy: Episode 100:  The Upper Limit: Living In Your Full Potential Episode 80: Self Compassion: The Secret Sauce of Life Episode 153: Connecting to Soul as a Path to Abundance Episode 55: Boundaries & Self Sabotage LIVE PODCAST EVENT Seasoned Wisdom Date: April 1st, 11am – 1pm Come soak up the wisdom that only comes from age…A signature event of the Water Bearer Collective in partnership with the Tend HER Wild Podcast. 188. Dr. Ren Stinson: Lotus, Liberation, and Expanding Masculinity

In this deeply moving and thoughtful conversation, Dr. Ren shares the personal, cultural, and professional journey that shaped his life and work. Origins & Identity Ren begins by telling the story of his first ten years growing up in Japan and the powerful meaning behind his name. Ren, which means “Lotus,” was intentionally chosen by his mother — a decision so unusual at the time that she had to seek special permission to have it officially recognized. She even had his name added to an approved registry so he would not be treated as a foreigner. Years later, the name would rise to become one of the most popular in Japan. A Childhood Rooted in Activism & Spirituality Ren reflects on the profound influence of his mother — a self-described “wild woman” and feminine activist — and a family culture steeped in both social justice and spirituality. As a child, he participated in nuclear peace marches and was even featured in the news as a baby alongside Buddhist monks. Raised in a bi-racial family in the Bay Area, Ren navigated a unique spiritual landscape: ·       A father who was a Christian minister ·       A mother who practiced Buddhism ·       Exposure to Japan’s polytheistic cultural traditions His parents fostered an environment of freedom, creativity, and deep acceptance. Masculinity, Culture, and Formation Ren shares how hockey culture played a significant role in shaping his early understanding of masculinity — including its strengths, pressures, and emotional limitations. These experiences ultimately led him to pursue psychology, where his multicultural upbringing and feminist influences deeply inform his clinical perspective. Understanding Men: Shame, Anger, and Social Expectations Ren discusses his work in homeless shelters, his research on masculinity and economics, and how systemic pressures shape men’s emotional lives. He explains: ·       Why anger is often more socially acceptable for men than shame ·       How economic expectations and social norms intensify male distress ·       The hidden emotional costs of trying to live up to an impossible masculine image Changing Rape Culture & Supporting Men’s Healing As the first male staff member at a women’s resource center, Ren facilitated men’s groups focused on sexual assault prevention and accountability. He shares insights about: ·       How patriarchal systems harm men as well as women ·       The “man box” exercise he uses to help men examine rigid gender expectations ·       How younger generations are showing greater emotional openness Expanding Masculinity (Not Redefining It) Rather than replacing masculinity, Ren advocates for expanding it — pushing the edges outward so men can live more fully and authentically. He speaks about: ·       The importance of permission-giving among men ·       Modeling vulnerability and emotional honesty ·       Supporting men to step outside restrictive norms The Role of Feminist Psychotherapy Ren highlights how feminist therapy frameworks help men develop self-compassion by understanding systemic influences rather than internalizing blame. This is especially vital for men who have experienced trauma or violence.  Harnessing Justified Anger for Change A powerful theme of the episode is how justified anger can become a force for healing and social transformation when channeled constructively. Hope for the Future Ren closes by sharing what keeps him hopeful: his direct connection to people’s real lives and stories. He reminds us that healing — individually and collectively — requires a return to genuine human connection and conversation. 187. Love and Solidarity: Stories from Minneapolis

Season 4 of Tend Her Wild opens with a refusal to play small. In this episode, we bear witness to what is unfolding in Minneapolis—and across our country—through the lens of the Wild Woman archetype. This conversation is about courage in real time, love under pressure, and what it looks like when women choose presence over paralysis. We ask the question Clarissa Pinkola Estés reminds us of how a culture heals, and we explore what happens when a community becomes “a family within a family,” tending one another through fear, grief, and fierce love. This episode holds pain and power, heartbreak and humanity, and a deep reminder that the wild woman rises precisely in times like these. What the Wild Woman Is Teaching Us Right Now What it means to not play small in moments of cultural rupture How the wild woman archetype shows up as truth-telling, action, and solidarity Why these times are calling women to step forward—even when scared Guest 1: A Minnesota Neighbor & Artist — Bearing Witness Through Action Our first guest is a local neighbor and artist from Minnesota who shares what it is like to live inside the unfolding events in Minneapolis. She reminds us that this is not the time to be quiet, even when fear is present—and that fear is not a reason to disengage. Key reflections from her story: The unique strength and resilience of Minnesotans The truth that we are all immigrants—and how civil liberties are being threatened What it means to live where you cannot step outside without witnessing history How COVID quietly prepared communities by strengthening relationships Neighbors delivering food, showing up, and caring for one another Using personal gifts—art, presence, nourishment—as acts of resistance The power of art as a kind of spell cast outward, carrying love and truth She speaks honestly about the emotional roller coaster of these days, while holding faith that this community is modeling something vital for the rest of the country. Guest 2: An Immigrant’s Perspective from Downtown Minneapolis Our second guest is an immigrant who has lived in the United States for nearly 30 years and currently resides in downtown Minneapolis. She shares the disorientation of desolate streets, the fear of leaving home, and the haunting familiarity of carrying papers—echoing memories of wartime survival. Her reflections include: Living with heightened vigilance and fear Recognizing that acts of oppression often stem from fear How community connection becomes harder when people are afraid to be seen The grief of reliving the past Why generosity cannot be taught—but must be practiced “Stay safe” becoming the new greeting She reminds us that anything rooted in fear, greed, or selfishness cannot last—and that when justice is destroyed, it will be reborn. We hold deep gratitude for these two women who chose to bear witness, sharing their stories with honesty and heart. They embody both courage and pain, reminding us that the wild woman does not numb—she stays present, rooted in love, and committed to life. 183. Anger: Still Channeling the Fire

“There is an aspect that women need to master if you’re going to be a wild woman and that is dealing with what can only be called women’s rage.  The release of that rage is required. Once women remember the origins of their rage they feel they may never stop grinding their teeth.  Ironically, we also feel very anxious to disperse our rage for it feels distressing and anxious.  We wish to hurry up and do away with it.  But, repressing it will not work.” —Clarissa Pinkola Estes in Women Who Run with the Wolves In this episode we explore: -How anger is often considered a “bad” emotion, but that it is truly useful information and can offer us energy to sort through the complexities of life -How perfectionism and the need to be nice can repress anger early in life -How Kate found anger and rage as young women in spaces (law, politics, human rights) where appropriate anger could be acknowledged and accepted -How Betsy, whose training was to be good, nice and likable, held anger back until later in life -How women often repress anger, which then can manifest in the body as depression, heart problems, digestive issues -Heathy ways to express anger and how to figure out what message anger is trying to give us A Finnish study that mapped emotions onto where they are felt in the body https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1321664111 Past Episodes You Might Like with Kate & Betsy:  Episode 163: Rage As Teacher Episode 131: Life Quakes Episode 124: Shadow Work Episode 98: Shake if Off: Facing the Criticism and Embracing Your Light Episode 76: Women Finding Their Voice Episode 55: Boundaries & Self Sabotage Episode 42: Midlife Awakening: Rise from the Ashes Episode 33: Anxiety: Surrender with Gratitude Episode 30: Grief: It’s Complicated Today’s Episode sponsored by: Kate Moreland Coaching Dr Yoga Momma Heartland Yoga Want to do your own Heroine’s Journey with Dr. Betsy? 182. Uma Subramaniam: Yoga is Life

In today’s episode, we dive into a rich and inspiring conversation with yoga teacher Uma Subramaniam. Uma shares her journey from growing up in India—where yoga was a natural part of daily life—to her years in the U.S. financial industry, and ultimately, to rediscovering her calling as a lifelong student and teacher of yoga. Through her story, Uma beautifully illustrates how yoga is not just a practice, but a way of being—one that guides her understanding of purpose, balance, and self-awareness. In this episode, we explore: Roots in India: Uma’s early exposure to yoga through her father and how morning practices by the sea taught her stillness, breath, and focus. A Spirited Beginning: How she describes her young self as a “Tasmanian devil,” and how yoga offered her a grounding foundation even as a child. Life Choices and Transitions: The story of her arranged marriage, her studies in international business, and her move to the United States. Returning Home: Her family’s decision to move back to India—to care for her parents and reconnect their children with their heritage and culture. A New Chapter: Uma’s choice to leave the corporate world and return to yoga as a path to healing and wholeness—ultimately earning her master’s degree in yoga and opening six yoga studios. Yoga as a Way of Life: Uma’s belief that yoga is life itself—that its true purpose is to help us understand who we are and why we are here. What’s Next: Her excitement about the upcoming Yoga Teacher Training with Betsy and Kimberly, launching in Iowa City in January 2026.Bio: Uma’s early experiences with yoga started at the age of 10 with her father, and strictly adhered to traditional yogic principles that included practicing before sunrise on an empty stomach. An Arts graduate with a specialization in English Literature, she later went on to pursue an associate degree in International Business. She worked as an Internal Auditor for one of the top banks in the US and lived in the US for over a decade. When she moved back to India in 2008, she turned back to yoga for personal practice and soon decided to teach. She has a Master’s Degree in Yogic Sciences, a Master’s degree in Vedanta (philosophy) and is a Yoga Alliance Registered ERYT500 Teacher, RCYT(Children’s Yoga) and RPYT(Prenatal Yoga) certified teacher from the Yoga Academy. Uma designs her classes to work slowly into classical practices beginning with awareness to spine, breath and the mind space. “I like my students to experience transformation with even a simple 30 minute practice”. She considers herself still a student, a teacher and therapist, a believer in yoga, naturopathy, ayurveda and natural, holistic and wholesome treatment of the human body and mind. Her happiness and satisfaction lies in her students improving steadily and in having strengthened their interest and belief in yoga, and holistic treatment of their body and mind. She is happiest when she is also able to encourage them to inculcate this new-found way of living among their family and friends. With experiential knowledge of different schools of yoga (Sivananda, Satyananda, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Yin and hot yoga), and having watched the yoga industry bloom around the world and particularly in Bangalore, Uma helps lead your way to the many options and offerings yoga has for the discerning seeker. 181. The Year of Endings & Beginnings

At the start of Season 3 on Tend Her Wild, astrologer and coach Cathy Pagano talked about 2025 as a year of endings and beginnings.  Today Kate and Betsy get personal and reflect on a moment in Iceland 4 years ago when they both had an inkling of something hard they were going to have to face.  Kate faced her challenge 2 years ago that we discussed in Episode 44, and now Betsy is facing her challenge.  We had no idea where this conversation would go, but feel it is an exploration into honesty, nudges from the soul, and surrender. In today’s episode we discuss:  Betsy’s internal process and her story of leaning into a big relationship change. The messiness of life, navigating times of doubt, and how our brain resists change which is why it’s easy to stay in complacency. The pockets of darkness, self-hatred, shame and guilt that accompany divorce. The moment Betsy turned inward, quit asking for people’s insights or perspectives, and chose to move into trust-fall and surrender. How when we don’t shed our skin like the snake, we cannot survive. Following the soul, breaking generational patterning, midlife reckoning, and moving into a life of more authenticity and truth. 180. Ginette Biro: A Near Death Experience & Divine Connection to the Other Side

Today’s interview was both eye opening and fascinating as we interviewed Ginette Biro, a medium (someone who can see, hear, and communicate with spirits on the other side).  We hear about her journey of opening into these gifts, and a near death experience she had at 2019 that encouraged her to step up and show more of her wisdom and perspective. In today’s episode we:  Learn how Ginette was already seeing spirits by the age of 5, but had no language to express it, nor family members with a similar gift. How her psychic gifts continued to grow and she began to hear spirit around 17 years old which freaked her out and led her to find mentors and guides to create a framework for her, and help her learn to discern her voice from the voice of spirit. How friends and family responded to knowing about her gifts, and the naysayers along the way. The near death experience that happened to Ginette in 2019 during a routine surgery that took her to heaven where she was greeted by friends and family on the other side. The white room that Ginette eventually made it to during her near death experience where she saw the blueprint of her life, had a life review, was given the option to change destiny points, and the decision she made to return to her body instead of stay in the realm of spirit. The agreement she made to spirit that she would step up and share more of what she knew with the world, and how Ginette is doing just that. Bio:   Ginette Biro s a powerful medium who is clairaudient, clairvoyant, clairsentient and claircognizant. She can hear, see, feel and know information from spirit and other dimensions. Since Ginette was a child, she has been channeling beings from the 4th to 12th dimensions, connecting people to the other side and bringing messages to inspire and inform our world. Ginette has many spirit guides and ascended masters and beings who are guiding her to support the planet in its ascension. In addition to these remarkable gifts, she has spent soul time on the other side through a near death experience. This allowed her to see and understand how our life blueprint and soul’s journey actually works. 179. The Heroine’s Journey: The Descent to the Goddess

We reviewed the Heroine’s Journey that we talked about in Episode 60, and took it a little deeper today after exploring this beautiful methodology for a full week on a recent retreat in Greece.  There are many steps on the Heroine’s Journey (see book by Maureen Murdock), but today we dive into the step called “Descent to the Goddess” and what this actually means.   Our conversation processes the retreat and what we both learned, as well as the lessons of several women who attended. Today we discuss: How historically the feminine energy got pushed down, and that perhaps it is because the feminine energy holds power and creation whereas the masculine holds consciousness and awareness.  We need them both but there is often a fear of power.  However feminine power is not power over (as we are used to in our culture), but rather power within. How we worked with Goddess energy on retreat, and the many different forms of Goddess that include: the maiden, the mother, the warriors, the sage, the mystic, the queen, the lover. Why it is important to understand which feminine energies you resonate with, which energies you push away, and how it is often the energy we reject that we need to integrate most in our life. The power of intergenerational learning (which we had on retreat – 44 women ages 28-76), and the big lesson Betsy got from one of the youngest participants. A call to all women to own our inner feminine as a way to soothe, integrate and harmonize what is happening in humanity. 178. The Four Agreements

In today’s episode, we dive into The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz—a timeless guide to personal freedom and transformation. As we prepare for our upcoming retreat in Greece with 44 incredible women, we explore how these four agreements can serve as a foundation for group connection, compassion, and authentic living. Together, we imagine what it would be like if our culture truly lived by these principles—and how much more kind, peaceful, and loving the world could become. In This Episode, We Discuss: How The Four Agreements reflects a re-wilding process—returning us to our true, untamed selves, which is at the heart of this podcast’s mission. Ruiz’s beautiful description of the “normal human being” at two years old—joyful, expressive, and unafraid to show emotion. The process of domestication—how the world teaches us to conform, quiet our voices, and disconnect from our authentic selves. How these agreements can guide us to live as peaceful warriors amid today’s uncertainty and change. The four agreements themselves: Be Impeccable with Your Word Don’t Take Anything Personally Don’t Make Assumptions Always Do Your Best The agreements that most resonate with us—and how we’re working with them as areas of personal and collective growth. 177. Are You Dysregulated?

It really is a time for us to step up and take some responsibility for our own nervous system, so for today’s episode we revisit the topic of nervous system dysregulation and how most of us are likely dysregulated due to the stressors of modern day life.  We reveal our personal nervous system default responses, and we talk about the tools that seem to help us get back to a more regulated state. Today we discuss: That stress is here to stay and how 1/3 of adults report stress is completely overwhelming most days according to a report by the American Psychological Association. How we cannot “think” our way to a different nervous system response because our nervous system is autonomic which is why somatic based approaches are key to helping us regulate. The signs that you may be dysregulated. The ways our nervous system responds to stress, and how each of us has a default response to stress. The things that Kate does to regulate herself and the things Betsy does. Why the type of connective tissue we have may also help us understand our default nervous system response and how Kate and Betsy have completely different types of connective tissue! 176. Carmen Serano: The Beauty Between the Breaks

In today’s episode, we sit down with actress Carmen Serano-Gingles, who shares a powerful story of healing, resilience, and transformation. Carmen opens up about navigating her own “dark night of the soul” and the hope she now brings to other women as a coach and guide. Having survived multiple layers of trauma in both childhood and adulthood, she eventually discovered true self-love and a deep sense of wholeness in midlife. Through courageous inner work and generational healing—supported by psychedelic journeys—she reconnected with herself and opened the door to authentic love. This journey is at the heart of her forthcoming memoir, The Beauty Between the Breaks, which she describes not just as a book, but as a movement of healing, connection, and love. In our conversation, we explore: Carmen’s painful first decade of life, marked by abuse and a deep sense of not belonging—at home or at school. Becoming a mother at 16, repeating her own mother’s pattern, and navigating a complicated relationship. The trauma and resilience tied to her son’s birth with cerebral palsy—and her determination that he would always be seen by the world. How her son opened unexpected doors, including being signed by a modeling agency at 19, which launched her acting career. Her 18-year marriage to a narcissist, a move to New Mexico, and raising two beautiful daughters while pursuing modeling and acting. A devastating sexual assault in her 30s that shattered her but also forced her to confront buried memories—ultimately becoming the catalyst for her healing journey. The lifelong process of facing her complicated relationship with her mother, and how her healing work has rippled across generations. The profound impact of psychedelic journeys, which helped her cultivate empathy for her mother and reframe her family dynamics. The arrival of a new, healthy love after doing the work to become whole. The vision behind her memoir and artistic collaborations—transforming pain into beauty and amplifying the voices of artists of color. Carmen’s story is one of courage, alchemy, and radical love. It’s an invitation to believe in the possibility of healing—no matter how broken the past may feel. Excerpt “What I Learned About My Mother” “And then my Nana came through. My mother’s mother, who had adored both of us. I heard her clearly: “Stop looking to her to be your mother. I am your mother. She is your tormented sister.” I knew she didn’t mean those words literally. It was a soul-level truth, a reframe. My Nana was reclaiming her maternal role in my life and reminding me that my ownmother was too wounded to play hers. “She cannot give you what you need.” And in an instant, everything changed. I wasn’t angry anymore. I wasn’t grieving what I didn’t get. I saw my mom not as the woman who failed me, but as a girl who had been broken too. A girl who had been hurt by her own father. A girl who survived things I’ll never fully understand. And in that space of truth, compassion bloomed…..” Learn more about Carmen’s work: Breaking Bad : Played Carmen Molina, the principal of J.P. 174. Codependent No More

This is a theme that we have been wanting to explore on the podcast for months, but have been dragging our feet. (Perhaps because we both identify closely with this pattern). We looked for an expert on this, and reached out to Melody Beattie last year, author of the best seller “Codependent No More”.  She agreed to come on the podcast but requested we wait until the Fall when she had a new book coming out.  Melody passed away this past February at the age of 76.  May you Rest In Peace Melody and thank you for opening so many of our eyes to the pattern of codependency. Today we discuss: The definition of codependence: You love other people more than you love yourself. Betsy’s reckoning with her own codependency. Kate’s first contact with the book “Codependent No More”. How control is the addiction of codependence. How women raised in a patriarchy are set up to align with the pattern of codependence. Why the relationship with our children is inherently codependent. The tools that can help manage this pattern. 173. Maddie Corman: Accidentally Brave

In today’s episode we interview Maddie Corman, an actress with a powerful story of betrayal trauma, how she managed the darkest chapter of her life, and the hope and support she is providing to other folks in similar situations.  After her husband was arrested for downloading child pornography, her world blew up.  It took her years to move through the aftermath, and she tells her side of the story (and why she choose to stay with her husband) in her new one woman show released on HBO called “Accidentally Brave”, and directed by Kristin Hanggi (former guest on our podcast). Today we discuss: Maddie’s first 10 years as a childhood actress living outside of New York, and her powerful relationship with her mother who died when Maddie was 16. The day that Maddie learned the news of her husband’s arrest, and how she did the only thing she knew how to do: go to work. The years of utter pain and confusion that followed the arrest, how she handled people’s responses to this very public news, the angels that came in to her life, her decision to stay her husband, and the deep healing that came. How Maddie navigated protecting and parenting her children, and how they are doing 10 years later. Why Maddie decided to get a coaching certification after the number of women reaching out to her wanting to talk about their betrayal trauma. Maddie’s Bio: Maddie Corman is a seasoned American actress and playwright that you’ve seen in classic films including Some Kind of Wonderful, Maid in Manhattan, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and our favorite television shows like Law and Order, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Madam secretary and Younger just to name a few.  She joins us today to talk about her own evolution and story of hope. After a personal crisis went public about 10 years ago, her world turned upside down. In her latest project, Maddie wrote a play telling her own story of betrayal called Accidentally Brave, The film version of Maddie’s acclaimed solo show Accidentally Brave is currently featured on Max and was directed by her dear friend Kristin Hanggi (a guest we adore and recently had on the podcast).  With unexpected humor, Maddie Corman shares a story of perseverance and hope in the face of crisis.  Maddie is also now doing betrayal counseling and coaching work through the accidentally brave community in an effort to support people struggling with betrayal trauma as a result of sex and porn addiction or infidelity to help them reclaim their story.  Maddie is married with 3 children and lives in New York.   To work with Maddie: https://www.maddiecorman.com/ Accidentally Brave on HBO: http://accidentallybrave.com/ To join the Tend Her 4.0 Course on Hope (It’s Free!), visit here: https://dryogamomma.com/tend-her-4-0-hope/ Past Episodes You Might Like with Kate & Betsy:   Episode 160: Are You Dysregulated?   Episode 133: Domestic Abuse: Wisdom from a Survivor, Dr. Lauren Welter   Episode 125: Shadow Work   Episode 103: Lyz Lenz : The American Ex-Wife  Episode 150: Healing the 3 Feminine Wounds Today’s Episode sponsored by: Locals Love Us  Kate Moreland Coaching Dr Yoga Momma Heartland Yoga Want to go on retreat?  Want to join Betsy in Costa Rica in May 2026 at her favorite retreat center to help you reorganize your inner space using yoga, meditation, energy medicine, and hypnosis?  All the details here! 172. Reverend Sarah Goettsch: Unapologetic

In this episode, we sit down with Reverend Sarah Goettsch, a Lutheran pastor whose preaching has inspired communities for over 20 years. A fierce advocate for social justice and an unapologetic ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, Sarah brings both fire and empathy to her ministry. Her journey has been shaped by resilience, courage, and a commitment to standing with those on the margins. Together we explore her powerful story—from growing up in a conservative faith tradition to breaking barriers as a woman in ministry, to speaking truth to power even when it comes at a cost. Today we discuss: Sarah’s early roots growing up in the conservative Missouri Synod, losing her mother at age 10, and stepping into the role of caretaker for her younger brothers. Her all to ministry and how her pastor encouraged her toward leadership, despite the male-dominated church culture. Her road to seminary from teaching in Hungary to finally following her deep call to become a pastor. The life lessons she learned in Seminary while studying alongside women who redefined her vision of leadership. Her personal challenges navigating divorce as a pastor and experiencing the judgment of her congregation. Sarah’s belief in speaking truth in preaching and her belief that a pastor’s job is not to condemn, but to remind others of God’s unconditional love. We discuss religion, fear, and control and how institutions use fear to control, why church attendance is declining, and the dangers of religion blending with politics. Sarah’s courage presiding over a same-sex wedding in a small town, facing backlash, and choosing to stand with the excluded. Why she’s drawn to “the edge,” always seeking out those who’ve been pushed aside. What she observed working with young women who constantly apologized, and how this robs us of passion and fire. Her gift of interweaving scripture with current events, showing up authentically even with fear. Why organized religion isn’t necessary for all, but can still be a meaningful way to wrestle with love, existence, and eternity. How after years in male-dominated spaces, Sarah now embraces the support and wisdom of women who see and uplift her. Sarah’s story is one of grit, honesty, and courage. She challenges us to rethink the role of the church, to confront the ways fear and control shape us, and to live unapologetically in our truth—even when it’s uncomfortable. In today’s episode we interview author Renee Zukin.  In her new book “Everyday I’m Brave” Renee shares her story of her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and her journey of conquering fear in order to live a bigger life.  Renee reveals that being diagnosed late in life after having her third child began a healing process that has led to finding freedom and using her gifts to help others conquer their fear. Today we discuss:   Renee’s early ability to hold the tension of opposites, both fear and adventure, when her family moved from Detroit to Iowa.  Her early love of fashion and how in an effort to fit in, she shut down parts of herself in middle school. How in her thirties she was misdiagnosed with anorexia and then finally correctly diagnosed with OCD which suddenly helped her make sense of her life.  How getting the right kind of support and strategies changed how she lived her life. Her evolution after diagnosis and how having information allowed her to make choices from a more grounded place.  The freedom she found when she learned that our thoughts do not define us. The impact of her OCD on her children and how they have adapted and supported her different habits.  How she has modeled resilience and bravery for her children by embracing fear and allowing herself different experiences to perform such as singing in a band and tap dancing. The importance of holding onto glimmers of hope and having trust that it will get better.  What she has learned about her own resistance and rebellion and how grace and self-compassion are necessary as we all have set backs. 169. Brenda Crawford: Part II – Cancer & Holding the Tension of Opposites

This is part 2 of our interview with Brenda Crawford about her journey through cancer treatment and her perspectives on living and dying 5 years into her journey. The shift in identity that Brenda experienced after her diagnosis, and how she began to embrace balance in a brand new way. Brenda’s realization that wasn’t good at self-care (even though she believed she was), and how her diagnosis snapped her into radical self-care. Her desire to feel all of life and no longer be desensitized to it. The impact of this diagnosis on her marriage, her kids, and the complication of cancer treatment during covid (she spent 18 months in her house). Her view that when people say “life never gives you more than you can handle”, her response is bullsh#@.  She believes life constantly gives you more than you can handle and our job is to surrender to what we cannot control and ask for help. 168. Brenda Crawford: Part I – Spiritual Sovereignty & The Cancer Diagnosis

Brenda Crawford is the first guest we’ve interviewed that didn’t have a bio for us to read, and she explained that what she would have had us read in years past is no longer fully true.  She has many accomplishments: psychologist, musician, wife, mother, businesswoman – however, her identity completely shifted 5 years ago when out of the blue, and with few symptoms, she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.   This interview was raw, real, funny, hopeful, and as Brenda said, an opportunity to leave a legacy for my children.   We were so spellbound by Brenda’s story that it’s as if we were beyond the confines of time, which is another way to say, we need 2 episodes to cover her full story!  Today’s episode is an introduction to Brenda, her family, her history with the medical establishment, and her initial reaction to her diagnosis.  Check next week for part 2 of this amazing interview. Today we discuss: How Brenda “loved my childhood” as a precocious child, but one who didn’t cry much or show pain. Her familiarity with the medical establishment starting with chronic ear infections as a child, a mystery illness at 5 years old that put her in the hospital for several weeks, a car accident in college, and now a 5 year journey through 104+ cancer treatments. Her amazing 2 children and why spiritual sovereignty has been a key concept in how Brenda is relating to them. The unexpected diagnosis that turned her world upside down during a time that she felt “on top of my game”. The moment her doctor showed her the scans of innumerable lesions on her liver and “everything stops and in a second your entire life is different”. 167. Dr. Jackie Kamradt: Being A Mom is the Best Thing for My OCD

In today’s episode we interview Dr. Jackie, a psychologist who has learned the power of self-disclosure when she began to speak openly about her relationship to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that has been present since she was a child.  Dr. Jackie brings both her personal experience as well as her professional knowledge to shed light on this disorder that impacts about 1-3% of the population. Today we discuss: How Jackie doesn’t remember a time before she had OCD, and has been managing it essentially her entire life. The amount of time Jackie spent on compulsions as a child, and the breakthrough that happened at age 12 when she saw her first psychologist and finally had a name for what she was experiencing as well as hope. The powerful message that Jackie conveys not only for people with OCD but for all humans:  you have to face the pain, difficulty and discomfort and sit with it instead of engage in behaviors that block it or lessen it.  Exposure to discomfort and learning to tolerate hard stuff it is the cornerstone of good therapy. Jackie’s new life as a mom, and how this has brought many of her OCD symptoms front and center, but how she can witness and see the symptoms and actually even thank them for trying to protect her before “putting it in its place”. 163. Rage as Teacher

In today’s episode we return to the book “Women Who Run with the Wolves” for inspiration and discuss the teachings around the concept of rage.  We explore the idea that rage is a teacher and allowing ourselves to listen and learn from our rage can be powerful and boost personal growth. As women we are often taught to be nice good girls, so rage can make us feel guilt and shame for being out of control.  The notion that not showing our rage, robs us of our voice and our authentic nature. Today we discuss: The concept of rage, how it impacts hope, and how it has shown up for each of us as a teacher. How rage connects to the wild woman archetype and that the natural state of being for the wild woman is “wolf”, which is not vicious until provoked. The idea that we all have rage in us because it’s a natural emotion and yet we can’t stay in rage too long or it will rob us of our agency and creativity. We share what is currently causing us rage in our culture: greed, loss of humanity and compassion and the objectification of women and loss of rights. What happens if we suppress our rage and don’t express it safely and move through it. Dr. Estes’ suggestion of “going to the mountains” to sit quietly with the  deep wise part of ourself and Betsy’s recent silent retreat experience. How we can work with rage and get to a place of forgiveness, understanding that forgiveness is a fluid 4 stage process, not a single act, with layers and seasons. 161. Intergenerational Trauma

In today’s episode we explore how the trauma can extend from one generation to the next through the intersection of our biology and our psychology.  This topic was briefly touched on during the recent free online Tend Her course, and lots of questions came from participants so we decided to dive a little deeper into the topic, and explore our personal lineages and what they might be holding. Today we discuss: What intergenerational trauma really is and the “7 generation” theory that says the healing we do can stretch backwards to our ancestors for 7 generations and forward for 7 generations to our offspring. A common question of “if I don’t have biological kids” does this apply to me? How the interest and research on this area came from studying the children of Holocaust survivors and finding they had 300% more mental health problems than the average population. There are 2 ways to work with intergenerational trauma: repeat it or be the cycle breaker. Why understanding allostatic load is important. Examples from our life of cycles we are attempting to break so our children won’t carry them forward. 160. Are You Dysregulated?

In today’s episode we explore the topic of nervous system dysregulation and how most of us are likely dysregulated due to the stressors of modern day life. ABOUT THIS SHOW
