18. Speed Training and Gaining More Distance with Andrew Hannon & Zach Gulley

from T-Time with Tori Totlis

Tori sits down with golf fitness trainers Andrew Hannon and Zach Gulley. Our guests kick things off with their thoughts on using social media as a tool for business growth, before diving into the meat of today’s conversation: each of their top five ways to gain more distance! Key Takeaways ?      (13:53) Improving your speed can increase your distance, but it’s not the only way to do so. Other factors that play into distance are improving the mechanics of your swing, and fixing or acquiring equipment specifically built for you. ?      (18:30) The gym will only take you so far. It’s never a bad idea to go to the gym and work on your fitness. But if you’re serious about unlocking your potential as a golfer, it’s important to work with a coach on a regular basis. ?      (21:46) Work on sequencing. At the most basic level, a swing sequence is a progression of movement from the pelvis to the torso to the arms to the wrists to the club. It’s not like that for everybody, not even tour pros. But Andrew and Zach train this sequence as a foundation because it results in maximum athletic motion. In other words, getting as close as possible to this particular sequence has been observed to produce the most power. ?      (30:48) Improve your force production. This is where the gym comes into play. How fast can you squat, bench, and row? Have a professional evaluate your current level of fitness as well as your body fat and other vitals, so that you’re able to create an optimized roadmap for your physical progression. Force production is crucial because more strength equals more speed. ?      (37:46) When screening a player, Andrew and Zack begin with trying to understand who they are as a golfer. What’s your motivation? Are you teachable? Are you willing to invest a considerable amount of time to achieve your goals? Most people are excited about the thought of improving their fitness and skills, but it’s just as important to willingly put in the time and effort needed to do so! ?      (42:01) Incorporate power implements to your training. The goal is to train your body to move lighter loads faster. Use equipment such as medicine balls and bands, and practice jumps to boost your force production. ?      (43:55) The three Ds of iron fitting are Distance, Dispersion, and Dissent angle. This is because each club has a different goal. Two clubs that do the same thing only make for a heavier bag. As important as distance is, without tight dispersion, you will have worse misses. The better your misses, the better your game. Likewise, if you’re not landing on and holding greens, your score will continue to add up.  Connect with Our Guests: Andrew Hannon: Instagram Zach Gulley: Instagram Subscribe to our FREE Female Golfer Facebook Group: First T Crew [Behind the Scenes of Women’s Golf] G ...
