Ambassadorial and other diplomatic posts are occasionally given out as rewards for political connections and campaign success to people who need a crash course in under- standing and engaging foreign societies, influencing governments and publics, conducting difficult negotiations, anticipating threats, and taking advantage of opportunities.

Our interview today is with Nicholas Kralev, executive director of the Washington International Diplomatic Academy, he leads programs that teach diplomats what they need to know to be successful in an often-misunderstood and under-appreciated profession.
