26. Demystifying Psychotherapy with Sarah Flanagan

from She Flourishes with Brenda Jasmin · host Brenda Jasmin

Have you ever wondered if you would benefit from therapy? There are many reasons why people seek out psychotherapy. Sometimes life experiences can cause us to form beliefs, patterns and ways of coping that no longer serve us. A therapist can help you to take a closer look at your emotional life – both past and present and explore some of the root causes that could be causing emotional issues and behavioural patterns you might be experiencing. Perhaps you’re at a point where you’re experiencing some emotional issues, and you’ve tried everything you know how to do for yourself, and you aren’t sure what to do next. You might be trying to resolve a dilemma in your life or trying to make a difficult decision. Other reasons you might go to therapy could include dealing with relationship issues, divorce, illness, death, grief, or a life transition. Sometimes you might notice that you have patterns you want to change or are dealing with depression or anxiety. These are just some of the reasons why you might decide to seek out a therapist. Listen in on my conversation with Registered Psychotherapist, Sarah Flanagan, as we talk about what psychotherapy is all about. Sarah helps to demystify the process of therapy and gives some insight into what it’s like to see a therapist, and the ways in which a therapist can assist you with emotional and relational issues that arise in your life. Here are some of the topics we discuss: The difference between life coaching and psychotherapy. What is relational psychotherapy? Demystifying the process of therapy. The benefits of psychotherapy. How to know when you might benefit from seeing a therapist. Sarah Flanagan is a Registered Psychotherapist working in Toronto. Before starting on her path to becoming a psychotherapist, she studied Theatre at the University of Toronto and worked for many years in non-profits, government, and higher education. In her work as a therapist, she provides a non-judgmental, supportive, and at times playful atmosphere in which clients can safely explore and be themselves. By offering a space to give voice to thoughts and feelings, connections can be made between patterns past and present, allowing her clients to access and build inner resources and authenticity. Sarah strives to work in an anti-oppressive, feminist, sex-positive, and LGBTQ2S+ framework.
