Since we talked about Nihonbashi yesterday, here's a fun fact about it.All bridges in Japan have an entrance and an exit. The entrance has a kanji sign (e.g., 日本橋), while the exit has a hiragana one. (e.g., にほんばし)Many years ago, it was said that all roads began at Nihonbashi bridge. While that's no longer the case today, the side closer to Nihonbashi was considered the bridge's entrance, and the farther side was the exit.Next time you cross a bridge in Japan, try to spot both the hiragana sign and the kanji sign!【Today’s words】日本橋(にほんばし)/ The city and bridge name that is close to Ginza and Tokyo Station.A major commercial center in the Edo period (1603-1867), it was the starting point of the five major roads across Japan, and distances are still measured from here. The plaque that says “日本橋”was written by Yoshinobu Tokugawa, the last general of Edo period.★This post is also available on the broadcast channel (Japanese daily tips) of my Instagram. 【https://www.instagram.com/channel/AbbOi9lyhNtGwo6A/?igsh=enhqNGRyajhobnZ5】
