Rethinking societal attitudes vis-à-vis European integration Vortrag im Rahmen der Tagung "Beyond the Progressive Story: Reframing Resistance to European Integration The support of European integration among the citizens of the member states has always been more fragile than most of the literature would suggest. The phenomenon that is often called Euroscepticism has a longer and more complicated history than we tend to acknowledge. Its history cannot be reduced to the post-Maastricht period. The presentation provides a critical discussion of existing concepts such as the very term Euroscepticism and the idea of a permissive consensus characterizing citizens’ attitudes during the formative period of European integration. The talk will cover the full period of the Cold War to discuss the complex interrelationship between citizens, parties and other forms of interest representation on the one hand and the European institutions on the other. More research of this kind is needed to gain a better understanding of the long-neglected societal dimensions of European integration.
