Trzydzieści lat temu nie tylko rozpadł się Związek Radziecki, ale także oficjalnie rozwiązany został Układ Warszawski. Wielu mieszkańców Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej odetchnęło wolnością. Nastąpił okres przemian politycznych i gospodarczych, który doprowadził do ogromnego zróżnicowania w regionie. Część krajów weszło do Uniii Europejskiej i NATO. Wybuchły konflikty zbrojne od Kaukazu po Ukrainę. Białoruś pogrążyła się w swoistym letargu.Adam Balcer zwraca uwagę na to, Rosji łatwiej było zaakceptować integrację z Zachodem państw, które utrzymały niepodległość w okresie między pierwszą a drugą wojną światową. Należą do nich, między innymi, Polska czy Węgry, ale także trzy byłe republiki radzieckie, Litwa, Łotwa i Estonia. Powstałą też nowa linia podziału, któram zdaniem dziennikarki Oleny Babakovej, bardziej przypomina membranę, niż nową żelazną kurtynę. Co prawda epidemia Covid-19 podkreśliła ponowny podział kontynentu przebiegający wzdłuż granicy strefy Schengen, jednak w odróżnieniu od czasów ZSRR, nie jest to bariera, której przekroczenie może grozić śmiercią.Wbrew niezwykłemu optymizmowi ostatniej dekady ubiegłego wieku, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia nie stała się obszarem niekwestionowanej wolności i bogactwa. Transformacja stworzyła nowe wyzwania ekonomiczne dla mieszkańców regionu, pojawiły się też konflikty zbrojne, a ostatnie lata pokazały spadek atrakcyjności Zachodu i wzrost tendencji autorytarnych. Babakowa podkreśla, że wielu mieszkańców wschodniej części Starego Kontynentu, bardziej niż sukcesu gospodarczego, brakuje obecnie poczucia godności, co skutecznie wykorzystują polityczni populiści.
