30 Years in Federal Prison for Moving a Box of Pamphlets

Eight people were sentenced this week for a July 4th protest outside the Prairieland ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas, getting a combined 450 years in prison. Only one of them, Marine veteran Benjamin Song, fired a weapon. The other seven shot no one.Five defendants got 50 years each for “providing material support to terrorists.” The evidence included wearing black, carrying first-aid kits, using Signal, and belonging to a left-wing book club. Daniel Sanchez Estrada got 30 years for moving a box of zines after a protest he didn’t attend.The trial judge, Trump appointee Mark Pittman, said the difference between this and January 6th was that this case was charged differently, with a finding of terrorism. The other sentencing judge, Reed O’Connor, called the protest an assault on democracy.
