300+ Arrests: Week One of Trump’s DC Police ‘Takeover’

from Washed Up in DC · host Colin Mullaney and Abigail Cavizo

Donald Trump declared federal authority over the DC police force, and deployed the national guard one week ago on Monday, invoking a section of the Home Rule Act of 1973; he did so on the basis that DC is allegedly in a state of emergency and overrun by crime. This action has led to over 300 arrests, including many illegal immigrants — such as the aggressive arrest of a Venezuelan national, which was published by the Washington Post over the weekend. Encampments are also being cleared from federal property. Attorney General Pam Bondi was challenged in court over the replacement of DC Police Chief Pamela Smith, and for now, Smith will remain in charge of the Metropolitan Police Department. However, media reports indicate that more national guards from other states will be deployed to DC in the coming days, and that Trump intends to extend the declaration of emergency beyond its initial 30-day period.
