I've found that the easiest way to overcome this is by challenging yourself to do things that you're uncomfortable with until they become comforting.I used to be concerned about what people would think about me while running on the side of the road, pumping myself up for some motivation. By continuing to do this, not only did I not care what people thought, but I also learned that I was creating a lot of false dialogues in my head. A lot of people who I would have deemed to think I was "nuts" for running and yelling to pump myself up have come up to me and said that seeing me on the roads has motivated them to be better.This has helped me not care about what people may think of me in the normal world, too. Be like an owl, don't give a hoot about what someone may think about you.
