34. Eating Disorder Recovery: Cooking and Gardening As Healing with Patrilie Hernandez
from Welcome to Dismantling Diet Cultured: F*ck Being Calladita · host Dr. Hortencia Jimenez
In today's episode I had the honor to share the space with Patrilie Hernandez. Patrilie Hernandez (she/they) identifies as a higher-weight, multiracial, neuroatypical, queer femme of the Puerto Rican diaspora. They have worked in the health and nutrition sector as an educator, advocate, and policy analyst for nearly 15 years, shaping their understanding of how the pursuit of "health" seamlessly intersects with built environments, equity, and social justice. It wasn’t until they were diagnosed with an eating disorder in 2017 that they realized how much of their own disordered behaviors and thoughts around food, health, and bodies infiltrated all aspects of their personal life and career. Patrilie uses her own lived experiences and Body liberation journey to disrupt the status quo of current health and wellness spaces and advocates for a weight-inclusive paradigm that includes other social determinants of health that influence individual and community wellbeing. Patrilie combines their academic background in culinary arts, anthropology, nonprofit management, and nutrition and works as a consultant, partnering with medical, healthcare, and education providers in integrating weight-inclusive, interdisciplinary, and multi-dimensional strategies that aim to improve the health of historically marginalized populations. In today's episode Patrilie shared: 👉🏽Academic and professional journey 👉🏽her eating disorder diagnosis and healing journey 👉🏽How dieting behaviors impact daily life 👉🏽What does healing look like from an eating disorder 👉🏽 Marginalized and privileged identities 👉🏽The difference between individual and collective healing 👉🏽Intersections of fat and body liberation 👉🏽Cooking and gardening as healing and decolonizing 👉🏽Shortcomings of the anti-diet movement and so much more!
