    124. Inner Muscle: Building Confidence Under Systems That Benefit When You Shrink

In this solo episode, I’m hitting the metaphorical gym—but instead of building biceps, quads, glutes we’re building our inner muscle: self-confidence.But this isn’t your typical “just love yourself” pep talk. I unpack how confidence is not just a personality trait—it’s a form of resistance, especially for women, femmes, BIPOC, immigrants, queer folks, and anyone whose power has been systematically erased.I explore how colonization, patriarchy, white supremacy, and diet culture benefit from keeping us small—literally and metaphorically. I’ll guide you through what it looks like to rebuild that inner strength. We’re lifting more than just emotional weights—we’re breaking generational cycles. In this episode you’ll walk away with:Tools for cultivating confidence rooted in liberationWhat reclaiming your body and power actually looks like A reminder that your confidence isn’t arrogance—it’s survival, it’s power, and it’s reclamationRemember that you’re not too much. You’ve just been conditioned to believe your power is a threat. And guess what? It is because you are powerful AF!Thank you for your support! Eps 123: Your Granito de Arena Matters: Keep Showing Up

This episode opens with the sound of the drum and a prayer song that honors the spirit of a bird in flight, a sacred reminder of freedom, movement, and resilience. The drumbeat is not just an opening. It’s a call. A heartbeat. A prayer. In a world where systems of oppression try to cut our wings—where the current administration threatens our communities and silences our voices, this episode is an invitation to remember we were born to fly. To take up space. To shine. To bring light and hope, even in the darkest times. In this deeply honest solo episode, I share what it means to keep showing up even when we’re tired, grieving, or feel like we have nothing left to give. I reflect on recent posts from my IG:Supporting undocumented and mixed-status studentsCooking in bulk as care when you’re depletedRooting wellness in justice, not performancePracticing everyday resistance, even in small waysThis is not a how-to guide. It’s a soft landing place. 122. F*ck Being Calladita: Dismantling Calladita Culture

In this episode, I break down what “calladita te ves más bonita” really means — and how it's rooted in colonization, patriarchy, and diet culture. I’m inviting you to dismantle Calladita Culture — that insidious expectation that tells mujeres, especially Latinas, to stay quiet, not make a fuss, to shrink themselves, and swallow their pain. From phrases like “no hagas escándalo” to the silence surrounding abuse, body shame, and generational trauma — we’re naming it all, sin filtro and unapologetically. As a sociologist, I unpack how this culture of silence is deeply tied to diet culture, white supremacy, and systems of control. I share how it shows up in our bodies, our families, and our identities — and how we begin to unlearn it.You’ll walk away with tangible ways to reclaim your voice, stop apologizing for taking up space, speak your truth (even if your voice shakes), and understand how honoring your truth is a revolutionary act.Remember that we weren’t born to be calladitas. We were born to be loud, tender, complex, and free.---------------------------------I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts!Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and TikTok @drhortenciajimenezand visitwww.hortenciajimenez.com----------------------------------Dismantling Diet Culture: Fuck Being Calladita, is the only spanglish anti-diet podcast where your host Dr. Hortencia Jimenez shares her personal experience with diet culture, tips and strategies and education content to help you understand diet culture and systems of oppression so that you can have the tools to challenge diet culture. 121. You Already Have a Beach Body: Dismantling Summer Body BS

In this solo episode, I challenge and dismantle the toxic “beach body” narrative that diet culture loves to push every summer. Spoiler alert: every body is a beach body. You don’t need to shrink, detox, or “earn” your rest, your pleasure, or your food. You already have a beach body—right now, as you are. You do not need to burn, tighten, or disappear before putting on that swimsuit, those shorts, or that summer outfit. Diet culture wants you to believe that your joy, your wardrobe, and your worth are conditional. But guess what? They’re not. ¡F*ck that shit!Summer isn’t a reward for being thin—es la neta! Summer is yours to enjoy on your own terms. Your body doesn’t need fixing—it needs freedom and sovereignty. You are allowed to take up space. Period!I share tools to help you reclaim your summer with body sovereignty, healing, pleasure, and radical acceptance.Thank you for being here and your support!---------------------------------I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts!Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and TikTok @drhortenciajimenezand visitwww.hortenciajimenez.com----------------------------------Dismantling Diet Culture: Fuck Being Calladita, is the only spanglish anti-diet podcast where your host Dr. Hortencia Jimenez shares her personal experience with diet culture, tips and strategies and education content to help you understand diet culture and systems of oppression so that you can have the tools to challenge diet culture. 120. To All the Graduates: You Deserve to Be Honored

Welcome to another solo episode!Graduation season is here—and while timelines and traditions may vary, your accomplishments matter. In this episode I honor ALL graduates—those who walked, those who couldn’t, and those still on the journey. As a Mexican immigrant, farmworker, and first-gen scholar, I share my own bittersweet path through an underfunded school system. I grew up picking berries in the fields with my abuelita. I wasn’t seen as “college material.” I wasn’t even given the option to apply to UCs because no one advised me properly. I felt invisible in classrooms that should’ve nurtured my brilliance. And still—I made it and I know that you can do because you are doing it!This episode is also a reality check, our education system is not built for all of us to thrive, but we persist anyway. Whether you’re a summer or fall graduate, whether you’re celebrating loudly or quietly, this space is for you. Do not forget that you are worthy, brilliant, and more than enough. You belong in higher ed. You matter and your story deserves to be honored.Thank you for being here and your support! It means the world to me. In this solo episode, I take you behind the scenes of my acceptance into a prestigious international faculty program in Sweden and Finland—and what it means to finally fulfill a dream I once had to put on hold.I open up about the very real challenges I faced: navigating a complex application process, securing funding, and almost losing this opportunity—not because I lacked merit, but because of financial barriers. I also reflect on how growing up in a working-class, immigrant community and teaching at a community college shaped both my drive and my vision—even as I wrestled with imposter syndrome. This episode is a love letter to the dreamers, and the first-gen folks navigating doors that were never built with us in mind. Hola comunidad, and welcome to another solo episode!Today, we’re kicking off Pride Month by celebrating drag—not just as performance, but as protest, survival, joy, and powerful self-expression. This episode is rooted in love and in truth, and it was inspired by something so beautiful that happened at my college campus: a student-organized drag show to end the semester. The Sociology Club that I advise made it happen. And let me tell you—it was magic.I share reflections from the student-led drag show organized by my Sociology Club and what it taught me about visibility, belonging, and the radical power of joy.--------------------------------I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts!Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and TikTok @drhortenciajimenezand visitwww.hortenciajimenez.com----------------------------------Dismantling Diet Culture: Fuck Being Calladita, is the only spanglish anti-diet podcast where your host Dr. Hortencia Jimenez shares her personal experience with diet culture, tips and strategies and education content to help you understand diet culture and systems of oppression so that you can have the tools to challenge diet culture. 111. Aging, Beauty, and the Double Standard: Breaking Free from Diet Culture

Welcome to another solo episode! In this episode, I dive into the social construction of aging and explore the immense societal pressure women face to age "gracefully." From the wellness and beauty industries promoting anti-aging products to the deeply ingrained belief that women must retain their youthful appearance, I unpack how these messages shape our perceptions of aging. I also tackle the double standard that exists for men, who are often celebrated for growing older, while women are penalized.I also analyze how diet culture plays a pivotal role in reinforcing these harmful standards, urging women to fixate on their weight, appearance, and age. Join me in challenging these societal norms. 109. Honoring Our Abuelitas—Holding Space for Multiple Truths

In this solo episode, I hold sacred space for our abuelitas—the ones who nurtured us with tender love and the ones who carried their love in silence, often hardened by struggle. Too often, abuelitas are romanticized in media, portrayed as purely loving figures, yet the reality is more complex. Some provided warmth and comfort, while others, shaped by their own trauma, expressed love through discipline, distance, or even harm.In this episode, I honor all abuelitas—the ones who cooked for us, prayed for us, and held us close, and the ones who were strict, tough, or even hurtful. Holding multiple truths is essential: they were products of their time, shaped by colonialism, patriarchy, and generational trauma. But we are the bridge between past and future. In this episode, I explore:🌿 The tenderness and wisdom many abuelitas passed down🔥 The hard realities of tough and even abusive grandmothers🔗 Breaking intergenerational cycles while honoring our roots🕯 Ways to hold space for grief, love, and healingWe carry  our abuelitas lessons, but we do not have to carry their wounds. ---------------------------------I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts!Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and TikTok @drhortenciajimenezand visitwww.hortenciajimenez.com----------------------------------Dismantling Diet Culture: Fuck Being Calladita, is the only spanglish anti-diet podcast where your host Dr. Hortencia Jimenez shares her personal experience with diet culture, tips and strategies and education content to help you understand diet culture and systems of oppression so that you can have the tools to challenge diet culture. More than just clothing, Laura’s designs make bold statements about body sovereignty and self-love. She spoke about the often-overlooked struggles many women face postpartum, emphasizing the need for compassion, gentleness, and patience during this transformative stage of life. One of the most inspiring aspects of Laura’s work is her experiential offerings, such as boudoir photo shoots. These aren’t just about creating stunning images—they are empowering experiences that encourage women to reconnect with their sensuality, creativity, erotic energy, and confidence. Laura’s journey and the mission behind Señora Calzones are powerful reminders of the strength found in vulnerability, community, and self-love. 93. Transforming Body Image Through Journals and Affirmations: Insights from Alejandra Porta

Welcome to another episode! I had the joy of speaking with the incredibly insightful Alejandra Porta. Alejandra is a designer and the creative mind behind a transformative journal and affirmation deck that promotes positivity and health at any size. Our conversation delved into some crucial topics: body image, mental health, and the influence of societal standards on self-acceptance. Alejandra shared personal stories of how diet culture had impacted her, highlighting the struggle many of us face in trying to fit an unrealistic mold. It's a battle that often feels isolating, but knowing that others share these experiences can be incredibly validating. We discussed how daily affirmations could help shift our mindset. When you wake up and start your day by affirming your worth and rejecting negative stereotypes, you slowly reprogram your mind to recognize and celebrate your unique beauty and value. Alejandra’s designs aim to inspire and uplift, providing a tangible way for people to engage with their self-care practices. One of the most profound pieces of advice Alejandra shared was the importance of taking your time and not rushing through personal endeavors. It’s refreshing to hear this reminder to slow down and honor our individual journeys in a world obsessed with instant results. 91. “Is Grad School for Me?”

Welcome to another episode of Dismantling Diet Culture: Fuck Being Calladita. In Episode 91, we dive deep into the question many of us ponder: “Is Grad School for Me?” Joined by distinguished guests, Dr. Miroslava Chavez Garcia, a Professor of History at UC Santa Barbara, and Dr. Yvette Martinez-Vu, a grad school productivity coach and co-host of the Grad School Femme Mentoring podcast, we explore the intricacies of academic pursuits, the hurdles faced by marginalized communities, and the importance of self-care. Academia is certainly not a one-size-fits-all journey. It demands passion, resilience, and a strong support system, especially for those from underrepresented communities. Whether you’re contemplating grad school or already deep into your academic journey, remember that it’s okay to prioritize your mental health and well-being. 90. Embracing Gratitude: A Pathway to Healing and Connection

Welcome to another solo episode! dive deep into the transformative power of gratitude. Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and appreciating the good things in our lives. At its core, it requires awareness, recognition, and acknowledgment. We cannot truly give gratitude if we’re in a negative state of mind or don’t see the blessings around us. It's not uncommon to think, “What the fuck am I grateful for? I'm struggling,” especially when life is difficult. But it's precisely during these tough times that practicing gratitude can offer the most profound shifts in our energy and mindset. Gratitude can be as simple as waking up in the morning and thanking the creator, the ancestors, or the spirits for another day of life. It’s recognizing the small blessings, whether it’s the ability to breathe, having food and shelter, or feeling safe. Often, we take these basic things for granted. Our offerings don’t have to be material; they can be simple actions like watering a plant, singing or slowing down to be more present. These small acts cultivate a mindful and harmonious relationship with the world around us. 89. Embracing Transformation: Journey to Body Liberation and Healing

Welcome to another episode! Today I had the honor to share the space with Kim Guerra, a therapist, author, and creator of the "Badass Bonita" brand and someone I call a friend.  In our conversation, Kim and I delved into the intricate connection between childhood trauma, family influence, and diet culture. Growing up in an immigrant family in Los Angeles, Kim faced the challenges of responsibility and survival, coupled with the heavy burden of trauma. These experiences, compounded by societal pressures, led to feelings of shame and self-blame for her body. Kim poignantly shared how her conditioning as a child to be silent and obedient contributed to internalized shame and disordered eating as a way to regain control amidst the chaos. Kim's book, "Badass Bonita: Breaking Silence, Becoming Revolution, Unearth Your Inner Guerrera," provides a framework for achieving body liberation. Through her writing, Kim shares her deeply personal experiences, such as trauma, abuse, divorce, family dynamics, queerness, and intergenerational healing. The book is structured in four parts, each representing a stage of transformation: Caterpillar, Chrysalis, Breakthrough, and Using Wings. This metaphorical journey from caterpillar to butterfly echoes the challenging yet necessary steps we must take for personal and communal growth. Emphasizing the goal of body sovereignty and liberation, Kim's work serves as both a guide and an encouragement for others to embark on their healing journeys.  I invite listeners to support Kim by purchasing her book, available in various formats on Instagram and TikTok under the handle "Badass x Bonita." 87. Empowering Latinas: Sonia's Insights on Embracing Change

Welcome to another episode! Today I had the honor to share the space with Sonia Sanders, a Speaker, coach and founder of Mujeròn Movement. Sonia coaches Latinas to get out of their own way in order to take action, find their purpose and become the Mujerón of their dreams. After participating in Nuestra Belleza Latina, a national Reality TV show on Univision, Sonia realized there was a huge need for a platform that celebrated women for who they were and not what they looked like so she decided to amplify the stories of incredible Latinas who are doing big things professionally and in their lives that go far beyond their looks. Today, through the Mujerón Movement Event, podcast conversations and her coaching program, Mujerón University she creates community by bringing women together to work on becoming the best version of themselves and create a business and life they love. As a speaker, coach, and founder of the Mujeron Movement, Sonia has dedicated her life to empowering Latinas to step into their purpose. This episode offered a deep dive into her personal journey, the creation of her transformative programs, and her insights on self-care and personal growth. Here’s a more detailed look into the topics we covered. Sonia shared her personal struggles with body shaming and feelings of inadequacy, beginning with her participation in a beauty pageant. The term 'mujeron' often carries negative connotations related to body size and appearance in Latino households. However, Sonia has redefined it to signify a fearless woman who pursues her goals, engages in inner work, and gives back to the community. Her 'Mujeron' movement started with just a shirt and meetups in Phoenix and has evolved into virtual events, a podcast, and coaching programs. 86. Be Your Own Cheerleader: Cultivating Self-Advocacy and Inner Strength

In this solo episode I talk about the importance of being your own cheerleader. Life can be tough, and while community support is invaluable, developing the ability to cheer for ourselves is essential.  Be your own porrista! We must commit to becoming our own 'porrista numero uno' (number one cheerleader). Being your own cheerleader is a blend of self-awareness, positive self-talk, boundary-setting, and seeking external support. It’s about creating an inner ecosystem that thrives on self-encouragement and compassion. By implementing these strategies, you fortify yourself against life’s adversities and become better equipped to support others. After all, a well-nourished spirit can shine brightly in any community. She owns Healthy Phit Physical Therapy & Wellness Consultants in Charlotte, NC where she provides trauma-informed and weight-inclusive care to clients in diverse bodies and those in eating disorder recovery. It's a call to action for each of us to embark on our unique journey of self-exploration, to challenge the status quo, and to reclaim our inherent worth beyond the confines of diet culture. 84. Honoring Latinx/Latine Heritage Month: Reflecting, Celebrating, and Building Community

Welcome to another solo episode! In this solo episode I share my thoughts on why it’s crucial to understand the significance of Latinx/Latine Heritage Month, both personally and collectively. This special period runs from September 15 through October 15, covering the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries as well as Mexico. The essence of Latine Heritage Month lies in elevating our communities, celebrating our contributions, and honoring our ancestors' struggles. This period is an opportunity for intentional reflection on our roles and responsibilities in making a meaningful impact on society. It's about asking ourselves, "What is the mark I want to leave inon this country? " Our responsibility goes beyond mere acknowledgment; it demands action. We must initiate and participate in movements that challenge the status quo in the personal, professional, and social spheres. This is a call for social justice that echoes beyond the confines of this month. It's also important to note what Latinx/Latine Heritage Month is not: an opportunity for cultural appropriation, tokenization, or performative allyship. If you are not part of the Latin American community, it is pivotal to approach this period with a genuine intent to understand and support rather than capitalize on it. Your actions should be intentional and aligned with fostering meaningful change. Moreover, avoid asking women of color for free labor. Our contributions should be acknowledged and compensated, reflecting the value we bring. I encourage you to reach out, collaborate, and uplift our community. If you’re interested in the intersections of undieting, immigrant identity, student parenting, and higher education, consider collaborating with me. Book me for your next event. 81.Embracing Body Liberation: Dismantling Diet Culture with Dr. Monica Peralta, MD

Welcome to another episode! I have the honor and pleasure to share the space with Dra. Monica Peralta. Dra. Mónica Peralta is a physician certified intuitive eating pros counselor, mindful eating coach and body liberation provider based in Nicaragua. She holds a postgraduate degree in nutrition and diabetes. During direct patient care, she is determined to provide a safe space for her patients using a weight inclusive approach. While living in a fat body, she promotes body diversity and fights fatphobia one social standard at a time. In today's episode we unpacked complex topics like body standards, stigma, and the medical field's role in perpetuating weight-centric healthcare. Dr. Peralta opened up about the deficiencies she observed in the medical training system. The prevalent weight-centric approach not only oversimplifies health issues but also often leads to harmful patient care. This revelation steered her towards obtaining certifications in body-inclusive medical practices. The goal was clear – to ensure that future medical professionals could offer compassionate and holistic care, free from the biases of traditional health metrics. Dr. Monica Peralta not only shared her professional insights but also her personal experiences and battles. Her story is a testament to the resilience required to challenge ingrained cultural and professional norms. 79. Breaking Free from the Chains of Diet Culture: A Journey to Healing and Empowerment

Today, I had the privilege of discussing a crucial, yet often overlooked topic with guest Sima Al Safadi, is a Syrian American Registered Dietitian and intuitive eating counselor currently residing in the suburbs of Illinois. Sima was born in Kuwait but she’s lived in different parts of the world, Syria, Saudi Arabia, France and most recently in the US. Our dialogue shed light on the insidious impact of diet culture, a subject close to both our hearts, and a prevalent issue sweeping across continents from the U.S. to the Middle East. A significant part of our discussion focused on the alarming spread of Western diet culture across the globe. Sima illustrated how upon her return to Saudi Arabia, the rampant dieting trends and body image issues prevalent in the U.S. had begun making their mark even on Middle Eastern soil. This cultural infiltration fosters a sometimes toxic environment where personal worth is unnecessarily tied to physical appearance.Breaking free from the clutches of diet culture is no straightforward task—it’s a battle against deeply rooted norms and personal insecurities. However, with continuous dialogue, education, and a supportive community, we inch closer each day to healthier, happier societies. Let’s embrace this journey with open hearts and minds ready to unlearn, learn, and heal. 77. Embracing Your True Self in the Quest for Financial and Emotional Freedom

In today's episode I had the pleasure to share the space with Rita-Soledad Fernández Paulino, a Queer Mexican-American, former math teacher turned money & self-care coach. After years of dealing with various autoimmune health issues, PTSD, and ADHD, Soledad learned to use money as a tool to support their wellness and is now committed to teaching other progressive BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ+ folk how to do the same. Soledad wants to see you engage in D.I.V.E.R.S.E. self-care daily because your wellness is essential to the collective. Rita's innovative self-care acronym, DIVERSE, encapsulates habits crucial for nurturing one's bank account and interpersonal relationships. The focus on diversifying sources of income while investing in personal growth reflects a comprehensive approach to financial wellness that resonates deeply with many in marginalized communities. On this episode of the podcast, Rita reminds us all that self-care and financial care are not just parallel tracks but are deeply woven into the fabric of our lives. Every choice that includes an investment in our well-being, be it through therapy, coaching, or learning, amplifies our potential to live a fully enriched life. 76. Navigating the Waters of Imposter Phenomenon: Strategies for Self-Validation and Empowerment

In this solo episode, I dive deep into a topic that has resonated profoundly with my students and listeners alike—the imposter phenomenon. Today I share insights, strategies, and much-needed encouragement to those grappling with feelings of inadequacy. As a sociologist and a health coach, I advocate for acknowledging and reframing the language around this phenomenon. Rather than labeling it as a "syndrome," which implies a medical or psychological deficiency, we call it a "phenomenon" to underscore that it is a widespread experience influenced by external factors, not an inherent flaw. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who uplift and inspire you. Community is critical, especially for those of us navigating spaces where we are often times the only BIPOC person. Engage with people who encourage your growth and set boundaries with those who do not. Remember, our ancestors thrived in communities, and so can we. Foster and nurture these relationships, as they are intrinsic to our well-being and success. --------------------------------- I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts! 75. The Body Project: Empowering College Students to Dismantle Diet Culture

I am thrilled to introduce two inspiring college students and changemakers: Alejandra Catalina Quesada-Stone and Megan Westphal. Their innovative work through the Body Project at Colorado State University is creating waves in the fight against diet culture, and today, we're sharing their transformative stories and invaluable insights. Both Megan and Alejandra’s stories shed light on a critical point: eating disorders are deeply multifaceted and systemic. It's not just about the individual's choices or behaviors, but a confluence of societal pressures, cultural stigmas, and institutional failures. From shaming practices within medical settings to the glorification of unhealthy body standards by media, these influences collectively shape one’s relationship with food and self-image. This understanding is vital for anyone working with or experiencing eating disorders. We need to address not just the symptoms but the underlying systemic issues perpetuating these disorders. Raising awareness and advocating for more inclusive and effective support systems are crucial steps toward this goal. @the_body_project_csu Email: [email protected] --------------------------------- I would greatly appreciate if you can leave a review for this podcast Dismantling Diet Culture: F*ck Being Calladita onApple Podcasts!
