#34 Should We Step Back to Smaller Farms For a Better Future?

Back in the day, as in Roman times all the way up to the two world wars in the 20th Century, the majority of farmers had small holdings which they worked on behalf of Landowners from Gentleman Farmers to Royalty. The farmers were tenants or worked directly for the Estates and supplied the Gentry or the local villages and towns, and armies on occasion, with food and anything left over they could use themselves to feed their families and sell in markets. During the two world wars that model started to change as they had to supply food for both the War Effort and for the Nation. That changed again when Supermarkets came on the scene and started monopolising the food industry and forced many farmers into exclusive deals where the Supermarkets dictated the prices which were, and are, as low as possible to increase their profits. There is, however, a shift back from large superstores to more convenience style stores and these are increasing in number weekly. ALDI, the German Discount Grocers/Supermarket are opening a new store every week over the next 2 years and many of these will be small stores. Organic farming is on the rise and it is my belief that our farmers should break the monopoly of the huge supermarket chains and return to small holdings or smaller farms and produce food more for their local areas and stop exporting food around the world when there's people in their own countries going hungry.  How do you feel about that?
