It extends beyond simple enunciation and grammar to encompass tone, language style and mannerism. Some view it as a necessity for survival in professional settings. A way of disarming the majority to gain a seat at the table. But really, these personas are just a mask. A disguise used in hopes of gaining acceptance in circles where we’re considered an “other”. While it may feel helpful in less diverse spaces, it actually causes more harm.
