Als de jonge Dolores in verwachting is van haar eerste kind, onthult haar moeder een geheim: haar vader is haar vader niet. Ze is opgevoed door de Vlaamse communistische journalist Maarten, maar haar echte vader blijkt de Poolse bevrijder Michal te zijn. Hun werelden hadden niet verder uit elkaar kunnen liggen. Terwijl Maarten in zijn westerse cocon blijft vasthouden aan de marxistische theorie, ondervindt Michal in Polen dagelijks de communistische realiteit aan den lijve. Voor Dolores betekent deze onthulling het begin van een lange zoektocht, die uitmondt in een fascinerende reis door de Europese geschiedenis.
