Vijftien jaar geleden luidde Zembla de noodklok: rashonden zoals retrievers, bulldogs en teckels werden massaal gefokt op uiterlijke kenmerken die hun gezondheid ernstig schaadden. Platte snuiten, te kleine schedels en zwakke gewrichten waren het gevolg van een schoonheidsideaal dat belangrijker leek dan het welzijn van de dieren. Erfelijke aandoeningen zoals epilepsie en kanker namen toe. Er kwam nieuwe wetgeving. Wat is er in de tussentijd echt veranderd? Is de gezondheid van rashonden inmiddels een serieuze prioriteit, of is uiterlijk nog steeds de norm in de fokkerij? Vijftien jaar na dato maakt Zembla opnieuw de balans op.
