Lord handed them over to Philistines. They defeated Israel and took Ark of Covenant. Lord punished Philistines and they sent the ark back. People of Israel celebrated and thought theirs would be victory. But for 20 years….they were defeated continuously. Then with Samuel’s instructions….they fasted and prayed and asked the Lord for his forgiveness. Right then Lord gave them decisive victory over Philistines. They erected a stone at Mizpah and called it Ebenezer (hitherto Lord has helped us).
