But if we just look at the phrase “chastened my soul with fasting”….we understand that one of the main goals of fasting is chastening (purifying our soul). Soul has the faculty of thoughts, desires, inclinations, decision making, etc…How are our thoughts and desires?If they are inclined more towards worldly things and fleshly things…..we need the chastening. Let’s just check our thoughts and desires we had in the last few days….we will know our inclinations. Also note from the verse that it’s voluntary (“I chastened…”).
