Aging & HIV - Interview with Dennis Fleming

Science & Technology Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #469. Today's show is brought to you by Medterra.

At the start of the HIV epidemic more than 30 years ago, people who were diagnosed with HIV or AIDS could expect to live only 1-2 years after that diagnosis. This meant that the issues of aging were not a major focus for people with HIV disease.

Today's show is about aging with HIV, and I think you'll find our guest, Dennis Fleming, as I have, and that's someone to root for, yes, because, today, his HIV is undetectable, but someone who is living a long, healthy life.

Nearly half of all people living with HIV in the United States are age 50 or older. This is mostly because people are living much longer with HIV thanks to novel, effective, inhibitor attachment therapy, and that's good news.

The bad news is research increasingly shows that diseases that typically strike HIV-negative people, men and women, yes, women, too in their 60s and 70s are occurring in people with HIV in their 40s and 50s. These concerns have brought the issue of aging with HIV to center stage. One of the biggest unanswered questions is why this is occurring, what it all means in relation to research, clinical trials, and support and resources for those, like our guest, Dennis Fleming, age 60, and those men and women over 60 with HIV.

We'll talk about that and a lot more on today's program. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, Dennis Fleming.

My thanks to Dennis Fleming for his willingness and candor today about aging with HIV. Please check out our list of resources in today's show notes. Julia-ism Julia Mariano Hi, I’m Julia Mariano, host of the Julia-ism podcast. Join me every week to talk about “Julia-isms.” The term coined by my mom, these are only things I would think, let alone say out loud. From being a workaholic to why sometimes friendship don’t work out, I am not shy about anything. It’s weird being a twenty-something living in today’s world, especially being a 24 year-old working as a pediatric neuroscience nurse, and I want to talk about it! If you can relate, tune in so we can discuss. I’ve had many jobs and worked with lots of inspiring and successful people. I then set up my own business, and I have crossed paths with many other successful entrepreneurs and business owners. From a very early age, I was always intrigued by how some people would achieve so much, yet others would struggle.I carried this through my entire working career. When I started a new role, I would often spend a lot of time observing and studying the top performers. Over the years, I have noticed patterns in overachievers, many of which I have incorporated into my work, business and lifestyle. I truly believe we work so much better when we collaborate and learn from each other, whether learning positive habits and skills to learning from each other's failures and shortfalls.I have started a podcast where I speak to high performers within various industrie OGs Not Old Heads Oktane and Shug The OGs Not Old Heads Podcast is your go-to podcast for the latest and greatest in the world of Hip-Hop, hosted by the dynamic duo, Oktane and Shug. The Gambler by Katherine Thurston Loyal Books Clodagh, 18 years old, is the eldest daughter of Dennis Asshlin, an Irish gentleman who lives in an area of Ireland called Orristown. Dennis is passionate, proud and indebted to no one. But, Dennis has an obsession with gambling that is leading the family to ruin. When tragedy strikes, Clodagh finds herself in a situation where she must defend the family honor because “no Asshlin is ever obliged to anyone”. She marries a man she does not love who is many times her age and is thrust from adolescence to adulthood literally overnight. Clodagh travels to Europe and mingles with people of society and fashion which through her immaturity, she believes is her right. She finds instead uncertainty, despondency, and deceit. Her emotions are constantly in battle with reality as she discovers her society acquaintances are not the “friends” she believes them to be. During her visit to Europe, Clodagh discovers that she too is burdened with the Asshlin curse for gambling which eventually leads to mo
