90 percent of the world's trade is shipped by sea. Thus, sea freight transportation has a key role to play in decarbonizing the freight transportation sector. Eva Cadilhac, an expert in system mobility and transport solution from Searoutes, explains how to most effectively calculate CO2 emissions for sea freight transportation and what carriers as well as shippers can do to reduce emissions. Note: More and more ship operators are turning to Liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel and a greener and less climate-damaging solution to marine diesel. Please note, that the International Council on Clean Transportation concluded in a study already in January 2020 that LNG as a fuel produces 70 to 82 percent higher greenhouse gas emissions than marine diesel. Yes, it emits approximately 25 percent less CO2 than conventional marine fuels in providing the same amount of propulsion power, but LNG is mostly methane, a potent greenhouse gas that traps 86 times more heat in the atmosphere than the same amount of CO2 over a 20-year time period.
