Despite extensive searches, police initially found no trace of her, until her belongings and phone, with the battery removed, surfaced weeks later. In February 2004, her partially decomposed body was discovered in a sewer, her fingers and toenails painted with red nail polish, a detail that mystified investigators. The unusual polish application and lack of struggle suggested she may have been dead when it was applied, fueling speculation of a perverse motive. Leads, including a suspicious white car and a nail polish purchase, led nowhere. In 2019, a witness recalled an unsettling encounter with a man resembling the Hwaseong serial killer, though police cautioned about memory distortion.
