598 The Great Commission: Apprenticeship to Jesus

Wednesday, September 17th: Jesus’ Great Commission centers on one clear command: make disciples, not just decisions. In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus roots that mission in His authority, explains the method—going as we go, baptizing into the Triune Name, and teaching people to obey—and promises His constant presence. Dallas Willard called out the church’s “great omission”: celebrating professions of faith while neglecting apprenticeship that actually trains people to do what Jesus said. Scripture paints a full picture of discipleship: abiding in Jesus’ word (John 8:31–32), becoming like the Teacher (Luke 6:40), loving Him through obedience (John 14:15,23), sharing His life now (John 17:3), practicing together in community (Acts 2:42), and walking in good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:8–10). Disciple-making is an everyday calling—“as you go”—woven into the ordinary places we already inhabit: homes, workplaces, schools, and online spaces. Grace doesn’t cancel effort; it fuels training with Jesus so His life becomes our new normal. We begin with a simple pathway—Vision, Intention, Means—cooperating with the Spirit through practices that form us into people who naturally do what Jesus taught. The Sermon on the Mount gives practical content for “everything I commanded,” from reconciling quickly to trusting the Father instead of hoarding. Common obstacles—feeling unqualified, too busy, afraid to fail, or worried about being “weird”—are met by Jesus’ promise: “I am with you always.” Ultimately, disciple-making immerses people into the shared life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—a life we don’t just defend with words but actually live inside.Email me your questions, comments, and suggestions.
