40 years ago on this day, mountaineering great Reinhold Messner shocked the climbing community, and the world, when he summited Everest alone and without supplemental oxygen.   On August 21, 1962, Jim Beatty, three days after setting the outdoor U.S. Mile record, broke his 3:56.5 mark with a 3:56.3 in Helsinki.
