61. A Golfer-Who-Plays-Tournaments vs. The Tournament Golfer with Mike Booker

from T-Time with Tori Totlis

I’m sitting down with Mike Booker, author of The Tournament Golfer’s Playbook, to discuss the differences between the “golfer-who-plays-tournaments” and the “tournament golfer”. Compared to recreational rounds, tournaments can get lonely, not to mention become a pressure cooker of expectations for the tournament player. However, Mike says that playing tournaments is a vital step to improving your golf game, no matter your level. While too much pressure can become debilitating, the right amount of it can reveal your strengths and weaknesses in ways recreational golf never can. When it comes to separating the true tournament golfer from the golfer who happens to play tournaments, Mike explains that the tournament professional is decisive, process-oriented, and looks at the big picture; while the dabbler is dithering, results-oriented, and agonizes over every shot and putt. As he wonderfully puts it: “The tournament golfer doesn’t live in a world of good breaks and bad breaks. They don’t have any excuses. They take responsibility for every shot they hit, no matter what the outcome is. They know what they can control and what they can’t control. About the Guest: Mike Booker is the author of The Tournament Golfer’s Playbook. Well-known in the world of Texas amateur golf, Mike has won a record number of Texas Golf Association events and multiple Texas Player of the Year distinctions. For over 50 years, he has competed against and alongside some of the most accomplished Tournament Golfers including Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, and Arnold Palmer. In 2019, he was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Jackie Burke and Ben Hogan. Grab a copy of The Tournament Golfer’s Playbook by Mike Booker at www.tgplaybook.com.
