Episode 56: Ancestral Foods with Anthropologist Claudia Serrato In today's episode I had the honor to share the space with Dr. Claudia Serrato. Dr. Serrato is based in East Los Angeles, is a distinguished Indigenous culinary anthropologist and a professor of ethnic and food studies. With roots in P’urhépecha, Huasteca, and Zacateco heritage, she began her culinary journey in her youth, cooking alongside her elders. Dr. Serrato holds a Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Washington, Seattle, and has dedicated her life to preserving Indigenous culinary traditions and advocating for the decolonization of diets. Beyond her academic pursuits, she is a celebrated chef, recognized nationally for her contributions to the Native food sovereignty movement. In 2015, she received an honorary title from the Native American Culinary Association. Dr. Serrato co-founded "Across Our Kitchen Tables" and has been featured in prominent media outlets. Currently, she serves at California State University, conducts research on first foods, and offers specialized consulting. She remains a pivotal voice in food justice and sovereignty.
