Peregrine falcons nesting on high-rise ledges, cougars prowling in yards, and seals lolling on urban beaches: these are now familiar sights to city-dwellers and to those who follow them on social media. As environmental studies professor Peter S. Alagona shows in his new book THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities this relatively new phenomenon of thriving animal life in urban areas is more than an eye-catching curiosity or an example of society encroaching on nature. Instead, it's a whole new ecosystem, one that shows how animals and humans can live together peacefully, how species can adapt in extremely short time periods, and how we can start to right the ecological sins committed when urban sprawl first began.

Peter Alagona will be reading a brief passage and description from his book in just a moment, but let me give you a quick message from one of our partners today, Ka'Chava

I've asked our guest, Peter Alagona, to introduce his reading selection today for us…

That of course, is our guest today, Peter Alagona reading a passage from his new book, THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities.  Let's jump in and meet historian of science, conservation scientist, and nature-culture geographer Peter Alagona, our guest today.

My thanks today to our sponsors, Ka'Chava Archives.com and Elysium Health.  Please check out our show notes for more information about our sponsors, and please support our sponsors because they, in turn, support the show.  My thanks to Dr. Peter Alagona, author of the new book 'THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities.' Julia-ism Julia Mariano Hi, I’m Julia Mariano, host of the Julia-ism podcast. Join me every week to talk about “Julia-isms.” The term coined by my mom, these are only things I would think, let alone say out loud. From being a workaholic to why sometimes friendship don’t work out, I am not shy about anything. It’s weird being a twenty-something living in today’s world, especially being a 24 year-old working as a pediatric neuroscience nurse, and I want to talk about it! If you can relate, tune in so we can discuss. P.S., this show is much better when you have a sweet and salty snack to enjoy as you listen.Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliaismpodcast/ Personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliiamariiano/My ShopMy for products mentioned in episodes: <a href="https:// Behind Their Success Podcast Abs Mechial I started working in my dad's convenience store when I was about 11 years old (cliche, I know) Since then, I have not stopped working. I’ve had many jobs and worked with lots of inspiring and successful people. I then set up my own business, and I have crossed paths with many other successful entrepreneurs and business owners. From a very early age, I was always intrigued by how some people would achieve so much, yet others would struggle.I carried this through my entire working career. When I started a new role, I would often spend a lot of time observing and studying the top performers. Over the years, I have noticed patterns in overachievers, many of which I have incorporated into my work, business and lifestyle. I truly believe we work so much better when we collaborate and learn from each other, whether learning positive habits and skills to learning from each other's failures and shortfalls.I have started a podcast where I speak to high performers within various industrie OGs Not Old Heads Oktane and Shug The OGs Not Old Heads Podcast is your go-to podcast for the latest and greatest in the world of Hip-Hop, hosted by the dynamic duo, Oktane and Shug. The Gambler by Katherine Thurston Loyal Books Clodagh, 18 years old, is the eldest daughter of Dennis Asshlin, an Irish gentleman who lives in an area of Ireland called Orristown. Dennis is passionate, proud and indebted to no one. But, Dennis has an obsession with gambling that is leading the family to ruin. When tragedy strikes, Clodagh finds herself in a situation where she must defend the family honor because “no Asshlin is ever obliged to anyone”. She marries a man she does not love who is many times her age and is thrust from adolescence to adulthood literally overnight. Clodagh travels to Europe and mingles with people of society and fashion which through her immaturity, she believes is her right. She finds instead uncertainty, despondency, and deceit.
