"Assam & Darjeeling" is the story of two children who set out to rescue their dead mother from the Underworld -- a nightmare place where the mythological desperately tries to keep pace with the world above. The children encounter cell-phone carrying demons, forgotten deities from defunct pantheons waiting tables, and one nasty character called Juniper who takes a particular, personal interest in their quest. At the start of Book Four, Juniper is already waiting for us.

In "The Cradle" Jee is enjoying the new freedom that comes with being an exile from the land of the living. But she soon discovers that freedom has its share of discomforts and dangers. Caught in a torrential downpour, she is taken in by a kindly old couple who, it turns out, have story of their own to tell. And Jee discovers yet again that things in the Underworld are not always what they seem.
