66. Robert Hough (author of Anarchists in Love)

Robert Hough is the author of eight novels, including The Final Confession of Mabel Stark, The Culprits, and The Marriage of Rose Camilleri. Today we are discussing his newest book, Anarchists in Love, an historical novel about the relationship between well-known anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander ‘Sasha’ Berkmann. We discuss the novel, his inspiration, process, and Goldman and Berkmann’sinfluence on anarchism.Robert premiered this book at the Eden Mills Writer’s Festival in September, which I also attended. I was immediately drawn to it because of my own work surrounding anarchism, namely Rain’s Agenda and The Rise and Fall of Chaz Oregano. Rain was written first, and anarchism is portrayed therein generally positively, as I use it as an anti-authoritarian framing device.
