MegLush is a contemporary spicy open door romance author. Her debutnovel, Two for the Love of One, was published in 2024. We discuss thevarious divisions within the romance genre – open door, closed door– we discuss levels of spice and how she determines what is neededin a novel, and how this was all new to her because she’d never setout to write a romance novel in the first place, but that this wasinstead something she needed to write to honour her late father.IG:@meglushwritesFB:https://www.facebook.com/people/Meg-Lush-Writes/61555334625263/Tiktok:https://www.tiktok.com/@meglushwritesWhoKilled Arnold Muller:https://www.amazon.ca/Killed-Arnold-M%C3%BCller-Christian-Marchioni/dp/1067862919/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2BZ601UIK2S0N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XRb9JbBt4xwCu6oshBkxEg.LRdTHoOclNxIACHU_cJTKX5cpFiEKYBbFJ1zSRSEq8Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=who+killed+arnold+muller&qid=1785942747&sprefix=who+killed+arnold+muller%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-1Christian Jerry Marchioni on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/christianjerrymarchioni/JasonShannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. 97. Bruh, Do You Even Lift? w/ Alex Tilley (author of Mr. Strong)

AlexTilley writes fiction that wanders the borderlands between folkhorror, magical realism, dark fantasy, and the psychological. Hisbooks include Meshkwadoon Books 1 and 2, the novella Mr. Strong, andthe forthcoming Sefira’s Gloom. Before self-publishing, he spentyears devouring everything from The Lord of the Rings to Shakespeare,Anne Rice, poetry, and Jane Austen. He was in the Canadian ArmedForces for five years, where he earned a humanities degree whileworking full-time in his trade. He wrote as a hobby when he was in myteens, but the belief that he could write a full book didn't come tohim until 2019. When he’s not writing, he’s usually buried inresearch on mythology, religion, occult traditions, and thesupernatural. Alexis back to discuss his standalone novella, Mr. Strong. I previouslyhad Alex on back in episode 85 discussing his folkloric bookMeshkwadoon—Mr. Strong is entirely different, but Alex carries onhis usual style in having so much to say and tackling it with aplomb.Mr. Storng follows Elgin, a bodybuilder who’s identity is wrappedup in his body, his strength. Becoming disabled after a car accident, his whole perception of masculinity is thrown into crisis, and weElgin begin to spiral, and question his place in the world. Mr.Strong is a short book, and Alex is on the top of his game. Alex isalso reading my anthology The Moon Panther, which we discuss a bithere as well, and he’s reading Taming the Laser Leopard, myupcoming novel, as a part of my beta-reading crew, so you’ll hearus discuss that a bit as well. Moreover, we have a nice discussion onbeta-reading and how to approach this aspect of finalizing a book.Spoiler discussion at 49:10Alex’swebsite: alextilleyauthor.comAlex’sIG: @alexander_tilleyWhoKilled Arnold Muller:https://www.amazon.ca/Killed-Arnold-M%C3%BCller-Christian-Marchioni/dp/1067862919/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2BZ601UIK2S0N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XRb9JbBt4xwCu6oshBkxEg.LRdTHoOclNxIACHU_cJTKX5cpFiEKYBbFJ1zSRSEq8Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=who+killed+arnold+muller&qid=1785942747&sprefix=who+killed+arnold+muller%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-1Christian Jerry Marchioni on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/christianjerrymarchioni/JasonShannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. Returning guestRW Duder is back again. This time we’re talking about Amy Legacy, book 2 in the Amy series. RW, Rob, was previously on all the way backin episode 36 where we discussed Amy Book 1. This episode might bemildly spoilery for that first book, so maybe go and listen to thatfirst—but this is a slasher novel, so you’re here for the bloodand guts. Back in episode 36, Rob and I had some technical issues, and some of the audio got cut—most of what we lost was discussingserial killers and true crime, which I found was more relevant toLegacy, and we recreate that discussion here.Rob and DamianRichard’s website: www.darkcrowbooks.comFB:https://www.facebook.com/rwduderWhoKilled Arnold Muller:https://www.amazon.ca/Killed-Arnold-M%C3%BCller-Christian-Marchioni/dp/1067862919/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2BZ601UIK2S0N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XRb9JbBt4xwCu6oshBkxEg.LRdTHoOclNxIACHU_cJTKX5cpFiEKYBbFJ1zSRSEq8Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=who+killed+arnold+muller&qid=1785942747&sprefix=who+killed+arnold+muller%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-1Christian Jerry Marchioni on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/christianjerrymarchioni/JasonShannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. 92. Alien Cats w/ Joe Mahoney (author of A Time and a Place)

Wayback in the early days, there was an author with whom I travelled insomewhat overlapping circles. He was promoting his debut novel, ATime and a Place. Online, i saw him sharing screenshots of Audacity, with track titles labelled Chapter 1, 2 etc, and captions that he'djust recorded another. In 2019, I attended a book show that thisauthor organized in Whitby, and I had just downloaded his finishedaudiobook off of Audible. I remarked to him how remarkable it was forhim to do his own audiobook, and he gave me the advice, perhaps inpassing, that if I were interested in audio, I should do my own, which seemed like a ludicrous idea at the time. But, here we are, seven years later, and I have 3—soon to be 4, if I can ever do thefinal touches on the Moon Panther—audiobooks out that I myselfrecorded, and it's Joe Mahoney that I credit with seeding that ideaof doing it myself.Thisweek I have Joe on to discuss his book A Time and a Place, hiswriting journey, the press that he has founded now that he's retiredand moved out to the east coast, and more, Donovan Street Press. Alex Tilley writes fiction that wanders the borderlands between folk horror, magical realism, dark fantasy, and the psychological. His books include Meshkwadoon Books 1 and 2, the novella Mr. Strong, and the forthcoming Sefira’s Gloom. Before self-publishing, he spent years devouring everything from The Lord of the Rings to Shakespeare, Anne Rice, poetry, and Jane Austen. He was in the Canadian Armed Forces for five years, where he earned a humanities degree while working full-time in his trade. He wrote as a hobby when he was in my teens, but the belief that he could write a full book didn't come to him until 2019. When he’s not writing, he’s usually buried in research on mythology, religion, occult traditions, and the supernatural.Today we are mostly discussing Meskkwadoon, Book 1, which I had the opportunity to read in audiobook, available on Audible.Spoiler discussion begins at timestamp 1:05:45Jason Shannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. JA Merkel is the author of the Fall Gauntlet novella series, as well as The Fourth Portal, a dystopian science fiction novel kicking off the Song of Saudade series. Here we mostly discuss the Fourth Portal, set in a distant future on another planet, where love itself has been criminalized. We talk about him, his process, editing, and how the Fourth Portal can be read as a commentary on individualistic vs communal societies. JA, as I found out, spent three years living in South Korea as an ESL teacher, and I just had to pick his brain on that because of the trip I took to Korea in the autumn of 2024, so we spend a few minutes discussing Korea. 72. Allen Steele (author of the Coyote series)

Allen Steele is a three-time Hugo Award-winning who has been publishing since the 80s. He’s well-known for his Near Space Series, the revival of Edmond Hamilton’s Captain Future series, numerous standalones (including one of my favourites, Chronospace, now named Time Loves a Hero), and, what we’re talking about today, his Coyote series. An intergenerational series following rebels who hijack an interstellar ship and colonize the habitable moon Coyote, the titular book came out in 2002. The main portion of the series consists of 5 books that take place on Coyote, and 3 spinoffs that mostly take place off of Coyote, and, as we’ll hear, Allen is currently working on a long-awaited next instalment in the series. As I tell Allen in our conversation, I have been reading his work for 25 years, and he is one of my favourite scifi authors. In fact, I have the entire Coyote series in the first-edition hardcovers, including one of the signed and numbered copies of The River Horses, which is a novella that bridges the gap between Coyote Rising and Coyote Frontier. In case you’re wondering, I have copy 107 of 500. In the past few months, all 8 novels ofthe Coyote Series have been rereleased by Open Road Media, and are available now. 69. Operation Salon Kitty (a Kawashima Yoshiko novelette)

Episode 69--yes, I'm juvenile enough to say "noice". Of course, I cannot miss the opportunity to capitalize on this moment. There will never be another 69th episode of this podcast. And so today, you, my valued listener, are getting an all new story, one salacious enough to be worthy of this episode. I first had this idea about 5 weeks ago, and thought how I could best honour this episode. Olive already has their own salacious story--episode 65. I thought, I don't have enough with Yoshiko. Yoshi should get their own salacious story, something involving espionage, I've been writing and researching a lot lately that takes place during WW2... The answer is staring me in the face. Salon Kitty. It practically writes itself. This is one of those little historical tidbits that just occupies space in my brain. Salon Kitty was a famed high-class German brothel used as a spying operation by the SD. Well-known clients included Goebbels, Ribbentrop, Sepp Dietrich, Francisco Franco's brother-in-law, and Mussolini's son-in-law.And so my resident spymaster, Yoshiko, the cross-dressing Manchurian quote-unquote princess... can they be roped into this somehow? Doing some research, the brothel opened in 1941 under SD management, and closed as the result of an Allied air raid in summer of 1942. The ultimate man in charge of the whole thing was Reinhard Heydrich, who also had something happen to him in 1942. Yoshiko, at this point, was under a travel ban--essentially a form of house arrest--in Fukuoka, Japan. Their Tianjin restaurant, which I speculate may have been an op, closed in 1939 after they were assailed by axe-wielding bandits, they alienated all their friends in the Japanese military, their former lover and CO, General Tada Hayao was contemplating assassinating them, and even their friends in the far right underground were no longer taking their calls; Yamaguchi Yoshiko, in her memoir, talks about how Toyama Mitsuru, chief of the Black Ocean Society, wouldn't speak to Kawashima. Kawashima had just met with Toyama, and their former suitor, Iwata Ainosuke, also the head of a far right secret society, as recently as 1935, for reasons unknown. The Fukuoka period of Yoshiko's life has a whole lot of nothing going on, except that they were dating a young woman named Sonomoto Kotone, and they were filing false police reports for petty money-making schemes. So... it's perfect. 1942 coincides with the operation of the brothel, the rescinding of Yoshiko's travel ban, and a particular event in Reinhard Heydrich's life. I have a story.Of course, it began as a short story, and then it ballooned into a full on novelette. It is 7 chapters and 15K words. But have no fear, the entire thing is being released today. No previews here, this is the full story. Moreover, the PDF is available in full on my website. With luck, I can premiere the paperback at the Sudbury Comiccon at the end of April. There will be more news on that in the coming weeks.I should note that, of course, this episode is explicit. Beneath Nevada by Isaac Fernandes - https://www.amazon.ca/Beneath-Nevada-Isaac-Fernandes/dp/B0G6VM2ZMP/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3J4PAXIQ7D402&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TNutXab6N7ddzELo9-V4bagRl8hAtlYL22zR1nKpK9FSh-kPdp7zQav2JZLL0fXL_WxjPnewaJyIsu8IlXadtXcrT2ExNkvAa9E02rNzvkOv7bpywdjvUzoiPJgm0AoSefvWqapUK-Vm4EMn2wkiiE8A5S8p4KSz2YC3EPufljl7ZEruZ39y9qweMZfzZdU5.Gf0fgM-y4dVavW1n33kQhUwf-Bh-9cLZH6IbQUVZVIQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=beneath+nevada&qid=1771373987&sprefix=beneath+nevada%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-1Jason Shannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. Brian Klingborg is the author of the Lu Fei mystery series. Today we are mostly speaking about Book 2 in that series, Wild Prey, wherein detective Lu Fei investigates wildlife trafficking, eventually landing him in Myanmar. There, he meets a half-Chinese warlady who, in my reading, bears a startling resemblance to the 1950s Golden Triangle opium kingpin Olive Yang.Brian’s website: https://www.brianklingborg.com/Look for “Sundown” coming soon—https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33726241/?ref_=nm_knf_i_1Jason Shannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. We talk about his writing, his journey as an author, questions of staying in your lane with regards to genre, and the struggles of trying to marketing in an online space—Ryan produces these hilarious Instagram reels satirizing the AI-generated marketing messages he gets, which I can certainly relate to. 66. Robert Hough (author of Anarchists in Love)

Robert Hough is the author of eight novels, including The Final Confession of Mabel Stark, The Culprits, and The Marriage of Rose Camilleri. Today we are discussing his newest book, Anarchists in Love, an historical novel about the relationship between well-known anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander ‘Sasha’ Berkmann. We discuss the novel, his inspiration, process, and Goldman and Berkmann’sinfluence on anarchism.Robert premiered this book at the Eden Mills Writer’s Festival in September, which I also attended. I was immediately drawn to it because of my own work surrounding anarchism, namely Rain’s Agenda and The Rise and Fall of Chaz Oregano. Rain was written first, and anarchism is portrayed therein generally positively, as I use it as an anti-authoritarian framing device. Chaz presents a much more negative case, wherein our hero is very much caught up in a militant anarchist cell, and the novel builds to what anarchists call the propaganda of the deed, which we discuss herein.Robert’s website: www.roberthough.caUpcoming events: The Junction Reads, February 1st https://junctionreads.ca/upcoming-schedule/This event is also going to be livestreamed. In debt to some Thai gangsters, crossdressing Burmese "princess" tries to run a ruby smuggling scheme just after the end of World War 2, at a ping pong club in Pattaya, Thailand. The Pattaya Gambit was developed as a short story within my Yang-Yoshiko universe, a prequel to my 2025 novel Tiger Blues. 64. A Bangkok Ping Pong Show (A Thai travelogue)

In 2019, I took a 4-country tour of Southeast Asia, a trip which would ultimately influence the development of my Yang-Yoshiko series in 2025. Part of that trip included a visit to a ping pong show at a go-go bar named Suzie Wong, in Soi Cowboy, Bangkok.I must be doing something right (?) with SEO, because the travelogue I wrote afterwards is consistently the second most popular page on my website. Now I have put that travelogue to the mic.Next week, I will be premiering a new Olive Yang short story, The Pattaya Gambit, which takes place at a ping pong show. heavily inspired by the events of this travelogue.Episode is explicit.Read the travelogue: https://www.jasonmshannon.com/pingpongJason Shannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. 62. B*tch-Slapping Stalin (a Yang-Yoshiko short story)

I am blown away. As I record this, I have just finished my lastbookshows of the year, in Smiths Falls and Brockville. While there may be some online sales that still come through, I can for the most part finalize my bookkeeping and look at the numbers. For many years now-in fact I think this has always been the case-The Zimmer Insurgency and the Hounds of Harujin have been my number 1 and 2 bestsellers. Well,Tiger Blues, my newest release, my first foray into steampunk, which is a bit of a niche subgenre, only came out in September. And it surged ahead of Hounds to become my number 2 seller, just barely behind Zimmer (incidentally, I will give a personal shoutout on the podcast if any three listeners want to push it over that finish line, because three more copies will be all it takes to tip the scales). And so today, we are releasing the audio for a Kawashima Yoshiko short story, Bitch-Slapping Stalin. This short story was included in the Kickstarter version of Tiger Blues, but has not been available to the public at large until now. This follows Yoshiko on a 1935 spying mission for Japan, set in Moscow, and based upon the incident wherein Mongolian Prime Minister Peljidiin Genden slapped Joseph Stalin. An historical note follows the main text.Read the story: www.jasonmshannon.com Jason Shannon is an indie Canadian author of science fiction and more. Erica Jurus is a dark urban fantasy / supernatural thriller author of the Chaos Roads trilogy, which consists of Book 1: Through the Monster Glass, Book 2: Into the Forbidden Fire and Book 3: Out of Time, which came out earlier this year. Erica spent her childhood traveling throughout Ontario, and curious about what highway exits led where, and what strange worlds might be just off the main road, which eventually led to the creation of her Chaos Roads trilogy, wherein hidden supernatural roads can connect tostrange realms and even alternate dimensions. She, like me, has a huge interest in history, which also plays into her writing, as her main character has a special connection to ancient Egypt. I met Sean this summer, and he told me that this book was based on a true story of his time working at a sex shop. It is a string of ridiculous encounters, one after the other, but is also surprisingly heartfelt, a roman a clef, a sort of autofiction very much in the style of someone like Charles Bukowski, who I absolutely love.
