Ever feel that sting when someone gives you criticism, even when you know it’s supposed to help? In this “How Do I…” episode of Be the Sun, Not the Salt, Dr. Harry Cohen and Connie Fontaine take on the surprisingly tough (and super common) challenge of handling feedback without letting defensiveness take over.

Here’s what you’ll hear:

  • Why even the kindest of us can get prickly when criticism comes our way
  • Simple moves that can turn a tough conversation into a personal growth moment
  • Real talk about the magic of pausing, breathing, and saying “thank you” (even when it’s hard)
  • How to spot the gold in critical feedback, without letting a single comment ruin your whole day
  • What to do when feedback feels overwhelming, and how to come back to the conversation when you’re ready
  • Why gratitude - genuine, not forced - leaves both sides feeling respected and seen
  • Thoughtful ways to ask questions and clarify so you actually get value from what you hear
  • Practical reminders that you don’t have to have the perfect reaction in the moment (and that’s okay)

If you’re working on being less reactive and more open, or just want a little encouragement to take feedback in stride, this episode is for you.

(This mini “How Do I…” episode is perfect for anyone who’s ever bristled at feedback, wants to show up as their best self, or just needs a little help finding the lessons in critique.)

A Brief Account of the Bahai Movement Ethel J. Rosenberg “Many believe that we, in this century,” writes Ethel Rosenberg, “ are witnessing the dawn of a new spiritual epoch or era. A renewal of the Spirit is making itself felt in the Churches and in the religious and social life of all lands. This is in harmony with the teachings of the Bahais, and of their Great Leaders, now represented by Abdul Baha the ‘Servant of God,’ known to the outside world as Abbas Effendi. Once again, the Light is shining forth from that land which may indeed be called the Holy Land: for have not its valleys and hills been trodden from the beginning by the feet of those great Messengers inspired of God—Abraham, Elijah, and last and greatest, Jesus of Nazareth? Is it strange that once more in this century of ours, in this ‘cradle of the race,’ those that were sitting “in darkness have seen a Great Light,” the light of the Sun of Righteousness that rises with healing in his wings?”Ethel Jenner Rosenberg (1858-1930) was a prominent British Bahá’í, having been Mari, Our Little Norwegian Cousin by Mary Hazelton Blanchard Wade Loyal Books "Long before Columbus discovered America, there were brave men in the north of Europe who dared to sail farther out upon the unknown waters of the Atlantic than any other people in the world. These daring seamen were called Vikings. Their home was the peninsula of Scandinavia, now ruled over by one king, although divided into two distinct countries, Norway and Sweden. Many of our Norwegian cousins have come to America to make a new home for themselves where the sun shines more warmly and the winds blow less keenly. Their fair-haired children are growing up amongst us, showing us the qualities their parents most admire. Be brave, be honest, be kind to all creatures, be faithful to every little duty,—these are the lessons they have been taught from babyhood, as well as their brothers and sisters who have not as yet ventured far from the land they love so well,—the land of rapid-flowing rivers, deep, dark bays, and narrow valleys.... Come with me to-day to the home of one of these blue-e Aesop's Fables: New Revised Version Aesop Aesop's Fables belong to every one of us. They were once simply the words of a slave; a man who lived 600 years before Christ. They were written down by a Greek, and then a Roman, and they spread, like the armies of Rome, across the known world. They were told around heathen campfires, and noble hearths; whispered in sacred monasteries and churches; lectured in Victorian school rooms and acted out by children at play. Each little fable is bound up with 2000 years of wisdom and truth. From these we know that a mouse is too weak to withstand the strength of a lion, yet too mighty to be bound by ropes. We learn that the violence of the North Wind is no match for the gentle beaming of the unrelenting Sun. We know in our hearts that the sheep must push through life, and try to overcome its many dangers, that the wolf will trick and deceive to survive, and that we cannot pretend to understand the logic of the gods if we do not hold ourselves to the same standard.
