7-10-26 ICE

Newly released surveillance video and eyewitness accounts dispute the government's description of the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE agents in Houston. According to the footage, Araujo was driving to work when two unmarked SUVs followed and stopped his van. The video does not appear to show Araujo ramming ICE vehicles or attempting to run over an agent, contradicting the Department of Homeland Security's initial claims. Three passengers in the van, including Araujo's brother, also disputed the government's account, but all three were detained by ICE and now face deportation proceedings. The involved agents were not wearing body cameras. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that agents had mistakenly targeted Araujo while searching for someone else. Araujo's family said they were unable to promptly claim his body because agents removed his identification when they killed him. Community members have since held vigils demanding justice, and the Mexican government said it will demand criminal investigations into agents who have killed Mexican citizens.
