Journalist Frank Westerman groeide op in Drenthe, in Darp om precies te zijn. Daar lag, diep in het bos, een batterij kernkoppen opgeslagen. Praktisch naast een massavernietigingswapen wonen had groot effect op zijn jeugd. Angst voor nucleaire oorlog, voor dienstplicht en algehele chaos maakten hem tot een opstandige tiener. Hij liep mee in demonstraties en protesteerde voor wederzijdse ontwapening. In zijn nieuwe boek 'De wereld volgens Darp' keert hij terug naar het dorp van zijn jeugd. Daar is de koude oorlog inmiddels weggetrokken. Maar in de rest van de wereld is dat nog lang niet zo. In filmische essays trekt hij langs de plaatsen waar de Koude Oorlog littekens achterliet.
