80. Miranda McKeon (Stage 3 Breast Cancer at Age 19)

from INTERLUDE: Cancer Stories with Dr. Teplinsky · host Dr. Teplinsky

On today’s episode, I am speaking with Miranda McKeon. Miranda is 19 years old and is a sophomore at the University of Southern California. She is an actress and well known for her role as Josie Pye on the Netflix series, Anne with an E. In June 2021, Miranda felt a lump in her breast and was very quickly diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She has been public in sharing her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment both on social media and on her blog. Today, she joins me to share more of her story – what it was like to receive the diagnosis upon landing in San Francisco (where she had been planning to work on a sustainable farm) and to have to turn around and fly back home to NJ alone, having to start chemotherapy and making decisions about fertility and cold capping, her mental health during treatment and so much more. This episode is open and vulnerable and a true glimpse into what breast cancer treatment is really like for young women.
