童年穷困，父母亲都要从事劳力工作，本地作家海凡表示，到了青少年开始思考，要如何才能让生活好转？ “我曾经在制衣厂工作过，24小时轮三班，两三千工人，那个时候60-70年代，新加坡有许多劳动力密集的工作，赚的钱很少，工作幸苦，环境恶劣，噪音很吵，空气污浊。当时觉得这个社会很多不合理，就开始想如何让生活更好一些。” 在华人社会，当时中国的文革的一些思想传到本地，看了一些中国的画报，接收了社会主义思想，受到了影响。 海凡和当时一些青年朋友参与了文艺团体，在团体当中认识了不少人，其中有地下组织的人。 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
