A City Still Standing

Proverbs 11:11“Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.”Today's Episode: A City Still StandingTwenty-five years ago today, New York City took a wound the whole world could see.The towers fell, lives were stolen, families were changed forever and a nation stood tunned.Today, we remember the victims, the families carrying names and empty chairs, and the first responders and ordinary people who ran toward danger.And we remember this: destruction spoke loudly that day—but it did not get the last word.Proverbs 11:11 says:“Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.”One wicked decision can wound a city and leave its people asking, “How could anybody choose to bring this much pain upon everyday workers, fathers, mothers and children?”Destruction can happen in a moment. But a city rises through a thousand blessings.My good friend, Dr. Thomas Grassano—a beloved pastor who has served the Bronx for decades—took me to the nine eleven Memorial. I’m telling you: if you ever get the chance, go. Standing in that holy place, you feel the weight of the countless stories preserved there:A firefighter climbing the stairs.A stranger carrying another stranger.A chaplain sitting with somebody in the dust.A neighbor opening a door.Somebody looking at the rubble and saying, “We’re still here.”That’s what made New York special to people everywhere: the city took the hit, but the hit did not become the city’s identity.When a city or school campus is wounded, we put its name beside the word strong.New York Strong.Dallas Strong.Texas Strong.We aren’t pretending it doesn’t hurt. We are blessing a wounded place with courage to stand.Maybe today you need to put your own name there.Fred Strong.Maria Strong.Your name—strong.Not because you’re invincible. Not because you’re untouchable. Because destruction may have touched you—but it don’t get to name you!Saying, “Your name—strong,” doesn’t deny the pain or worship the self. It agrees with the life God is still cultivating in you.A city is people, not merely a skyline.
