Grandpa Gone Too Far.
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 17:6 “Grandchildren are like a crown to the elderly, and the glory of children is their parents.”Today’s my day of freedom! FREEDOM!Our daughter and son-in-law finally gave us permission to share pictures of our grandson, Lakyn.Apparently, that’s a thing now.The new parents take a few days. They get settled.Dress the baby ‘how they want’...Take the perfect pictures ‘when they want’...Post them ‘when they want’...Then–and only then…the grandparents get released into the wild!I’ve watched my friends go through this for years. Now it’s my turn. And I’m trying very hard not to become one of those grandfathers who shows baby pictures to complete strangers....I’m trying.Proverbs 17:6 says:“Grandchildren are like a crown to the elderly, and the glory of children is their parents.”I’m 6 days into understanding that verse a little better. When I was younger, I thought, “A crown? OK…”Now I get it.This little boy is living proof that all the years mattered. All the prayers mattered. All the mistakes we learned from–mattered. The love mattered. The crown isn’t something you wear because you’re important. It’s something you receive because life kept growing. And all four of us grandparents...both sides...are wearing that crown with a smile. It reminds me of Fred Flintstone. The moment Pebbles came along, Fred couldn’t help himself.Every conversation somehow became about his little girl.Home movies.Pictures.Stories.Poor Barney probably saw the same baby crawl across the same blanket fifty times. And honestly...I’m beginning to understand my namesake from Bedrock.Because love has a funny way of overflowing.Maybe we’ve underestimated why God calls Himself Father.Maybe the love I’m feeling as a granddad is only a tiny glimpse of the joy God feels watching generation after generation discover life.Children.Grandchildren.Great-grandchildren.A family tree isn’t just growing outward.Every generation grows us deeper into the Father’s heart.Yea… Scripture calls grandchildren a crown. They remind us that love was never meant to stop with us.It was always meant to keep blessing the next generation.🔥 REMEMBERLove becomes a crown when it keeps growing into the next generation.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, let my love bless generations long after I’m gone.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGECelebrate someone from another generation today. Share a story, offer encouragement, or simply remind them they’re part of something bigger than themselves.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Shadows On The Sun
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 16:16 “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!”Brother Ali (one of my favorite Emcee’s) has one of my favorite album titles in hip hop:Shadows on the Sun.Think about that. Most shadows that we ever see come from the sun.How do you cast a shadow on the sun?Well, you have to listen to one of the album’s most memorable lines:“Leave it to me to create hope where there was none... My inner soul shall cast shadows on the sun.”At first it sounds impossible. Then I heard Brother Ali explain it.He’s an albino. For most of his life, the sun represented pain.It burned his skin.It blinded his eyes.He grew up being bullied because he looked different. When he wrote that album, he and his wife were raising a baby while living in a halfway house after seasons in homeless shelters.Money was scarce.Food was scarce.Hope was scarce. He said he realized he could create a world through his music where his inner light shined so brightly that it cast shadows on the very thing that had always made life difficult. That’s inner sight or as Proverbs in 16:16 calls it insight:“How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!”Gold shines.Silver shines. But shine can fool you.Insight sees what shine cannot. It looks beneath appearances. It finds hope where circumstances can’t.It discovers possibilities money could never purchase. That’s why wisdom is worth more than wealth.Money may change your surroundings.Insight changes how you see them.Brother Ali didn’t escape hardship. He learned to see through it.That’s the treasure Proverbs is talking about. The richest people are not always the ones with the brightest possessions.Sometimes they’re the ones whose inner sight shines brighter than the darkness around them.🔥 REMEMBERInsight sees what silver never could.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, give me insight that shines brighter than every difficult circumstance.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEWhen something difficult happens today, pause before reacting. Ask yourself, "What might wisdom see here that fear cannot?" Let insight become your first response.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Clean About-Face
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 15:24 (from The Message Version)“Life ascends to the heights for the thoughtful—it’s a clean about-face from descent into hell.”I used to love watching Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.Sergeant Carter would stand there, chest out, face tight, and bark:“AH-BOOUUTT…FACE!”And everybody would snap around.Well…almost everybody.Gomer would turn the wrong way, smile that big goofy innocent smile, and say something like:“SHAAAAM!”Those of you who remember the show can already hear it in your head. Those who don’t, go find a clip. It’s worth it.But that command came back to me when I read Proverbs 15:24:“Life ascends to the heights for the thoughtful—it’s a clean about-face from descent into hell.”A clean about-face.Not a slow shuffle. Not turning halfway and still looking over your shoulder.A settled decision.A new direction.Sometimes we try to change by white-knuckling our way out of a habit.“I’m not doing that again.”“I’m not going back there.”“I’m going to grip tighter, pray harder, and force myself not to fail.”But all that pressure can keep our attention locked on the very thing we’re trying to escape.A clean about-face works differently. You don’t keep wrestling with the old direction. You turn. You release it.You open yourself to what is ahead.Thoughtfulness gives you enough pause to ask:“Where is this taking me?”And once you see the descent, wisdom gives the command:“A-BOUT…FACE!”A tiny change in direction can create a completely different destination. An airplane lifts its nose only a few degrees, and before long, it is thousands of feet above where it started. That is the power of a thoughtful turn. You don’t always need more strength.Sometimes you need a cleaner decision.Stop staring at the road that keeps taking you down.Turn toward life.Turn toward peace.Turn toward the version of you that is no longer negotiating with destruction.Every ascent begins with an about-face.🔥 REMEMBERYou don’t always need more strength. Sometimes you need direction.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, help me turn cleanly toward life and wisdom today.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGENotice one place where you have been white-knuckling change. Instead of only resisting the old habit, choose one clear action that turns you toward something healthier.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Opened by Awe
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 14:27 (from The Passion Translation)“To worship God in wonder and awe opens a fountain of life within you, empowering you to escape death’s domain.”Fear has a way of shrinking the world. It convinces us we’ve seen all there is to see. That nothing will change. That this relationship will always be broken. That this diagnosis is the final chapter. That this dream is over. Then Jesus says something almost reckless to those who believe:“All things are possible...”Not because life magically gets easier.Because faith opens what fear keeps shut. That’s why I love the way The Passion Translation renders Proverbs 14:27:“To worship God in wonder and awe opens a fountain of life within you, empowering you to escape death’s domain.”I keep coming back to one word:Opened.Stay open.Wonder isn’t just amazement. It’s permission. It’s the quiet willingness to believe there’s more happening than I can presently see.Worship, then, isn’t escaping reality. It’s becoming available to a deeper one.The proverb says that awe opens a fountain of life.Think about that.A fountain doesn’t manufacture water. It releases it.Maybe that’s what worship does.It removes the cap fear keeps pressing down.Hope begins flowing again.Peace returns.Joy finds an opening.Courage rises. So…stay open.Sometimes we think “death’s domain” only means the end of our lives. But we encounter death in so many ways.Dead dreams.Dead relationships.Dead imagination.Dead compassion.Fear keeps trying to close you down.God keeps inviting you to open up again.Jesus spent His ministry opening things.Blind eyes.Closed hearts.Forgotten futures.People everyone else had already given up on.He wasn’t just preparing people for life after death. He was opening them to life before death.Maybe that’s today’s invitation. Not simply to ask God to change your circumstances.Ask Him to open you.Because when the heart stays open...Life keeps finding a way in.Stay…open!🔥 REMEMBERWonder opens what fear keeps locked.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, open my heart to Your life beyond fear today.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEPractice one moment of awe today. Step outside. Watch the sky. Sit quietly for five minutes. Lakyn Gets It All
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 13:22“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.”Well, family…He’s here. Our grandson, Lakyn, came into the world Saturday night, July 11, at about 9:45 p.m.And what a journey getting him here! Our daughter was scheduled to go in Thursday. She waited all night, but the call never came. They finally brought her in Friday afternoon, and then came another long stretch of waiting.Friday became Saturday.Morning became afternoon.Afternoon became night. Then, after all that waiting, Lakyn arrived! And suddenly, everybody forgot how long the wait had been.Proverbs 13:22 says:“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren…”I’ve always wondered what that verse would feel like once I actually became a granddad. What do I have to leave my children’s children?I can’t stand here and certify how good I am. Scripture reminds us that God alone is truly good. But I can say this:I have been loved so good. Our daughter has been loved so good. Both sides of little Lakyn’s family may not have vaults filled with money, but this baby was born into enormous wealth. He came into a family rich with love.Rich with prayer.Rich with people willing to admit their flaws and keep working on themselves.People committed to healing, growing, apologizing, learning, and becoming better than they were yesterday. That may be one of the greatest inheritances we can leave. Not the illusion of a perfect family.A family committed to refinement. Not people who never get it wrong.People who keep letting God work on what is wrong.Lakyn inherits our songs, stories, faith, lessons, laughter, and hard-earned wisdom. He inherits every prayer prayed before he knew our names. He inherits a family determined to become healthier so he can begin further down the road than we did. That is the inheritance. And it all goes to Lakyn. The love. The wisdom. The prayers. The unfinished work we promise not to abandon. He gets it all. We’ll talk about the meaning of his name another day.For now, welcome to the family, little lucky man. We’ve been waiting for you.🔥 REMEMBERThe richest inheritance is a family committed to becoming whole.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, let our love become Lakyn’s inheritance for generations ahead.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEIdentify one nonfinancial inheritance you are passing forward. On Tap
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 12:23“Those who possess wisdom don’t feel the need to impress others with what they know, but foolish ones make sure their ignorance is on display.”Hey, do you know people like this?No matter what you bring up, they’ve already done it.“Oh yeah…I’ve been there.”“Oh, I know him.”“I read that years ago.”“We’re friends.”“I’ve got one better…”Don’t those people get on your nerves?Yeah.Mine too.The funny thing is…I don’t always realize I’m one of them. I hear myself name-dropping all the time!Somebody mentions an artist and I’m like, “Oh yeah, I met George Clinton once.”They bring up a book:“That’s such a good book! I’ve read it.”Name a city:“I’ve been there.”And somewhere in the conversation, I catch myself thinking:“Fred…are you having a conversation, or auditioning for the most interesting man alive?”Maybe I just get caught up in the moment.Or maybe subconsciously I’m trying to earn airtime. That’s why Proverbs 12:23 stopped me:“Those who possess wisdom don’t feel the need to impress others with what they know…”What a freeing thought.Real wisdom isn’t insecure. It doesn’t have to prove itself every five minutes or turn every conversation into a résumé.Wisdom has something better:Restraint.Think about your favorite restaurant. The drinks are on tap. They aren’t spraying all over the room. They wait. When somebody is thirsty, you pull the handle, and there it is.Maybe wisdom works like that.Knowledge on tap.Good advice on tap.Your best stories and life experience, all available, but on tap.Not hidden. Not hoarded.Just there when needed. There’s a beautiful confidence in that. You don’t have to impress people with what you know.Become the kind of person others can come to when they need wisdom. That’s a quieter kind of influence. And honestly…Probably a wiser one.🔥 REMEMBERKeep your wise words on tap, not on repeat.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, teach me when to speak and when to wait.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEResist the urge to prove yourself in one conversation today. Listen longer than usual. If your experience can truly serve someone, share it. The Candle Doesn't Lose
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 11:24“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”A candle can light another candle without becoming less of a candle. That still feels like a miracle to me.One flame touches another wick, and the room changes. The first candle doesn’t panic. It doesn’t file a complaint. It doesn’t say, “Hold up wait, why is there another light in here?”It gives what it has, and the darkness loses ground.Proverbs 11:24 says:“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”That’s wisdom messing with our math.We assume holding tighter makes us safer.Keep the money.Guard your credit.Sit on the idea.Don’t let everybody know your connections. But Proverbs says there is a way to withhold that actually makes you poorer for it.Not just financially.Smaller in spirit.Tighter in the chest.Suspicious of everybody else’s shine. Then there is the person who gives freely. Not foolishly or performatively. Not until they’re empty and resentful.Just Freely.Open-handed.With enough trust to believe generosity is not the enemy of increase.A candle loses nothing by lighting another flame. In fact, it fulfills its purpose. The candle was never just trying to survive the dark.It was made to spread light. And maybe that is true for us too.The wisdom we share. The doors we open. The name you mention in the room. The support you offer when nobody is clapping for you. That is not loss. That is light moving “wick to wick”.That’s making the sacred positively contagious.Because when you help somebody else shine, you do not become smaller. The room gets brighter. And somehow, by giving freely, your own life gains even more.🔥 REMEMBERThe candle does not lose; the room gains light.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, make my life generous enough to spread Your light.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGELight one candle today. No Sorrow Added
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 10:22“The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.”There is a strange irony in this verse.Especially because it’s a favorite in the church. We quote it when things are going our way. When the door opens. When the money comes through. When the blessing looks exactly like we hoped it would.“The Lord has enriched me, and He adds no sorrow with it.”But if you know the Bible, you know Scripture is full of irony.Prisoners writing about freedom.Wanderers singing about promised land.A homeless Palestinian preaching an everlasting Kingdom under Roman occupation. So when Proverbs says God adds no sorrow with His blessing, it almost feels like Scripture is asking us to wrestle.Because Scripture never denies sorrow.Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.Death…precious in God’s sight? That is holy irony. The day this episode is released, I’m on my way to the funeral of my childhood friend’s wife, Tara Hooker.Tara and Louis met as teenagers.Louis was the coolest dude on our block. And when he fell in love with Tara, we all knew it was over.I mean over.We teased him because love has a way of conquering cool any day.Thirty years later, that love is still speaking.Today, it will be saying goodbye. That is sorrowful. And if you are going through grief right now, I don’t want to rush you past that. Some days the blessing hurts because the person mattered. Some days memories heal you and break you in the same breath. Some days faith doesn’t remove the tears. It gives them somewhere holy to go.So yes, Tara was and is a blessing. And yes, there is sorrow now.But the Bible does not deny sorrow. It just refuses to give sorrow the final word. That is what I hear in Proverbs 10:22:“The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.”It does not mean blessed people never cry.It does not mean loss does not hurt.It means when God gives a true blessing, the blessing itself does not poison us.It does not leave regret as the final taste. It makes us rich. And Tara made people rich. Her kindness remains. Her laughter remains. Her love remains. The way she shaped her family remains. And yes, today there is sorrow.Sweet. Heavy. Human sorrow. But sorrow is not the addition.Love is.Blessing is.Richness is.Sorrow comes because love was real. But sorrow does not get the final say over what love gave. The sorrow comes and goes. But the blessing stays.🔥 REMEMBERWe grieve deeply because we were blessed richly.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, help me treasure blessings even when grief is present.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEName one person whose presence made your life richer. The Structure Inside
Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Proverbs 9:9“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”You don’t really know how strong a building is when the sun is shining. You find out when the wind hits it.When the storm leans its shoulder into the walls. When the rain discovers the weak places. When the whole structure has to answer one question:What are you made out of?Most of us spend our lives praying to never get hit.But wisdom doesn’t stop there.Wisdom focuses on building the type of structure inside us to survive the strike.Proverbs 9:9 says:“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”I love that word instruction. And yes…it’s ‘word-play’ time:In–struction…inward–structures.Inner-structure!Because that is what instruction really does when we receive it well.It builds structure inside.A wise person doesn’t hear correction as an attack.A wise person hears it as construction. It’s another beam to add to my life. It’s another brace to anchor my soul.If I have no inner-structure, every bit of feedback feels like a threat.Every correction feels personal.Every lesson feels like somebody is trying to tear me down. But when wisdom is growing in me, instruction doesn’t shrink me.It strengthens me.That’s why the wise man “gets wiser”Because the wise know how to add. They add the lesson. They add the warning. They add the correction. They add the perspective. They keep increasing in learning because they are not too fragile to be formed. And maybe that is the question for today. Can God still build in me?Can someone tell me the truth without me collapsing? Can correction become construction? Can the strike reveal structure instead of breaking me apart? The strongest buildings are not the ones that never face storms. They are the ones built with enough structure to keep standing. So today, don’t just ask God to keep you from every strike.Ask Him to build the structure inside so you can survive it.🔥 REMEMBERInstruction builds the structure that the storm will later reveal.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, build wisdom within me through every lesson I receive.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEReceive one piece of instruction today without defending yourself first. The Code Behind The Crown
Proverbs 8:15By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just;Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Little Richard used to tell people he was the architect of rock and roll. And some folks laughed.Because to some people, he seemed too loud.Too wild. Too much. Hair high. Voice screaming.Piano on fire.A whole hurricane in a suit. But the funny thing is, the further down the road you go, the more you hear him everywhere. You hear him in the Beatles. You hear him in James Brown. You hear him in Prince, Jimmi Hendricks, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and even Lady GagaYou hear him in the whole sound and swagger of rock and roll. The crown was visible on other people. But the code ran through Little Richard…FACTS.The person wearing the crown is not always the person who wrote the code.Proverbs 8:15 says:“By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.”In Proverbs 8, wisdom is speaking in first person. And she’s saying, before the king ever sits on the throne, before the prince ever signs the decree, before the leader ever makes a decision, wisdom is already underneath the whole system. That’s invisible architecture. We see the crown. We see the stage, the title, the office. We see the CEO, the president, the artist, the athlete, the person out front. But Proverbs says, you must look deeper. What code is running underneath?Because raw power without wisdom will eventually crash the system.A king can have a crown and still lack wisdom.A leader can have a title and still be empty underneath.A person can have influence and still be running on ego, fear, revenge, or insecurity. The visible crown is not enough. There has to be hidden code. That is true in technology too.Everybody sees the app.Everybody sees the screen. But underneath it is architecture.Servers.Systems.Training.Patterns.Code.The visible thing only works because something invisible is holding it together.Wisdom is like that.It is the backend code of a well-lived life.It helps power serve justice. It helps influence serve people. It helps leadership become more than control. And maybe today the question is not, “What crown do I want?”Maybe the better question is, “What code am I running?”Am I running on wisdom?Or am I running on applause?Am I running on love?Or am I running on fear?Am I trying to reign over something before wisdom has trained something inside me?Because the crown may be visible. But the code is what carries the kingdom.🔥REMEMBERThe crown is visible, but wisdom is the code.🙏🏽PRAYERLord, let wisdom run beneath everything I build today.🎯TODAY’S CHALLENGEBefore you lead, decide, post, speak, or respond today, ask: “What code am I running right now?” If it is fear, ego, or control, pause and let wisdom rewrite the response.Fred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Bottom Seven
Proverbs 6:16These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber. So…what’s your top five?Top five rappers.Top five singers.Top five movies.Top five albums.Top five preachers, if you’re feeling extra churchy and dangerous. We love ranking what we love: constructing our own Mount Rushmore!Spotify tells me my favorite songs.Netflix gives me my top picks.Amazon has recommendations waiting before I even know I need socks, batteries, or another gadget I probably should not buy at midnight.Everything is learning what I like.My taste. My patterns. My preferences.Look at how Proverbs flips the whole thing.Instead of giving us God’s top five, wisdom reveals God’s bottom seven.Proverbs 6:16 says:“These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:”Yep…that is strong language.Hate.Abomination.These are not soft words. But notice something important. This passage is not showing us personalities or people God hates. It is showing us practices that destroy personalities and people. That is a huge difference.God does not hate people because they irritate Him.God hates what deforms us.God hates what makes us less human.God hates the things that poison community, corrupt the heart, twist justice, and turn neighbors into targets.Back in the day, Public Enemy had an album called Greatest Misses.I always loved that title.Because sometimes a miss can teach you.A miss can show you what is off.A miss can reveal where the aim went wrong. And in a strange way, Proverbs is giving us a holy list of greatest misses. Not because God is petty. But wisdom is showing us that we have to recognize what misses the mark.A proud look misses the mark.A lying tongue misses the mark.Hands that shed innocent blood miss the mark.A heart plotting wickedness misses the mark.Feet running toward evil miss the mark.A false witness misses the mark.A person stirring up conflict misses the mark. These are not just bad habits. They are anti-human habits. They break down what love is building up.They unravel trust. They make the world harder to live in.And here is where it gets personal.God has a repulsive reflex to His Bottom Six.There are some things divine love rejects immediately because love knows what those things do to people. The question is: do I have a holy repulsive reflex too?Not toward people.Toward the things that destroy people.Do I flinch when I feel pride rising in me?Do I get bothered when I catch myself bending the truth?Do I feel the warning light when I start enjoying conflict? That kind of reflex is not condemnation. It is wisdom waking up in the body.Sometimes spiritual growth means learning what to love. And sometimes it means learning what belongs in your bottom seven.🔥 REMEMBERGod hates what makes people less human.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, train my reflex to reject what destroys love today.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEExamine your repulsive reflex today. Notice one thing that should bother you more than it does: pride, dishonesty, conflict, cruelty, or injustice. Don’t aim that disgust at a person. Deep-Fried Freedom on the Fourth of July
Proverbs 4:17For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Every Fourth of July, I try to do two things.I get out on the grill. And I listen to Frederick Douglass.I know. That may not be everybody’s playlist between the ribs, the burgers, and the fireworks. But for me, it keeps the day honest.Because Douglass asked one of the most powerful questions in American history:“What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”He did not ask that because he hated freedom. He asked it because he loved freedom too much to let hypocrisy get dressed up in red white and blue and not be challenged.Don’t hand me celebration while somebody else is still carrying chains.Don’t invite me to the feast if the table was built on another person’s suffering. That brings us right into Proverbs.Proverbs 4:17 says:“For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.”That is table language.Bread.Wine.Appetite.Consumption.Proverbs is showing us people, and even systems, that have learned to feed on what should have made them sick.Wrong becomes normal enough to digest.Violence becomes familiar enough to sip.And maybe that is where the Fourth of July becomes more than fireworks and barbecue. It becomes a question:What are we eating in the name of freedom?Because freedom can be deep-fried too.Battered in the crunchiness of slick slogans.Dropped in the hot oil of indifference.Seasoned with the spiciness of outrage.Served up quick, like fast food for the soul.Easy to grab.Easy to swallow. But unhealthy things keep working underneath.A nation can celebrate freedom and still be captive to its appetites.Appetite for power.Appetite for domination.Appetite for comfort without compassion.Appetite for winning without wisdom. And before we point too far out there, Proverbs brings the question home. What am I feeding on?Do I feed on anger and call it awareness?Do I feed on contempt and call it conviction?Do I feed on fear and call it being informed?Because whatever we keep eating eventually becomes energy in us.This is not about hating the Fourth of July.Light the grill.Enjoy your family.Watch the fireworks.Celebrate every true gift of freedom. But let wisdom check the ingredients.Real freedom should make us more human, not less.More compassionate, not more cruel.More truthful, not more comfortable with lies.A nation approaching 250 years old has to ask if it is growing in wisdom, or just getting older with louder fireworks. And each of us has to ask the same thing. What kind of freedom am I practicing? The freedom to indulge every appetite?Or the freedom to choose what gives life?🔥REMEMBERFreedom rings hollow when wickedness is still on the menu.🙏🏽PRAYERGod, purify my appetite until freedom feeds compassion and wisdom.🎯TODAY’S CHALLENGEBefore you celebrate today, pause and ask: “What have I been feeding on?” Then choose one life-giving act of freedom: forgive someone, serve someone, tell the truth, bless your family, or refuse to feed on what keeps your soul unhealthy.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. You Know That Thing Magnets Do...
Proverbs 15:1A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. You put one side close, and it pulls the other magnet in.But turn it around the right way, and suddenly there’s this invisible resistance. No hands. No noise. Nothing dramatic. Just a force you can’t see, pushing something away. That always felt a little like Star Wars to me.Yoda lifts the X-wing out of the swamp. Obi-Wan waves his hand and redirects the room. Darth Vader stands there in Cloud City, Han Solo starts blasting, and Vader just raises his hand like, “Please. Not today.” Blaster shots deflected. Everybody in the room suddenly realizes, there is power here we cannot see.And that is the part that resonates with this ancient text.Proverbs 15:1 says:“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”That word deflect is important.A gentle answer does not pretend anger is not in the room. It feels the heat. It senses the smoke. It recognizes the emotional blaster fire coming across the table. Then wisdom raises its hand.A gentle answer turns the magnet. It creates enough holy resistance that anger does not get to land the same way.Harsh words do something else. Harshness is magnetic too, but it pulls temper closer. It gives anger something to grab. That’s Palpatine whispering into Anakin’s pain, feeding the wound, stirring the fear, turning heat into fire. And we have all been in rooms like that. One person carries so much harsh energy that everybody starts choosing their sentences carefully because one wrong syllable might set the whole thing off. The whole room becomes a verbal minefield. Nobody is talking freely. Everybody is surviving the atmosphere. That is the power of speech.Words are either a thermostat or a match.A soft answer is not weakness. It is not fake niceness. It is not letting somebody run over you. It is trained strength. It is truth with breath control. It is power that does not need to prove itself by exploding.Therapist Aundi Kolber uses the phrase, “Try Softer…Not Harder.” I love that.Because sometimes we try harder with our volume. Harder with our defense. Harder with our comeback. Harder with our need to win the sentence. But Proverbs says there is another kind of strength.Try softer.Lower the voltage.Turn the magnet.Let wisdom create enough space for peace to enter the room. You already have magnetism. Your tone pulls things closer or pushes things away. Your words can attract drama or deflect it. Your answer can make the room safer, calmer, wiser.Today, use the force wisely.🔥 REMEMBERTry softer, not harder; wisdom cools what anger started.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, teach me to try softer with wise words today.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGENotice your magnetism in one conversation today. Before answering, pause, lower your tone, and choose words that deflect anger instead of attracting it.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. The Rhythm of a Sound Heart
Proverbs 14:30A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.I took a CPR class once, and one of the things that stuck with me was the importance of rhythm. You don’t just start pressing frantically.Even though you’re thinking:“This person is dying!”You don’t panic and start pounding away.No.You follow a rhythm. A cadence. A beat. You stay in tempo because the body responds to rhythm. And I remember thinking:This is a trip.A song can save a life.A rhythm can help bring a body back from the brink. And that’s when Proverbs 14:30 came to mind.“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.”I love the phrase “a sound heart.”Not just because it means healthy. But because it makes me think about sound itself.Rhythm. Harmony. Being in tune.A sound heart gives life.A settled heart.A centered heart.A heart moving in rhythm with God’s goodness. But then Proverbs introduces envy. And envy is offbeat.Out of rhythm.Out of tune.Envy doesn’t just make you want what someone else has.It starts making you suspicious of the life God gave you.It turns another person’s joy into your private injury. It takes a testimony and makes it feel like an insult. And Proverbs says that kind of thing gets into the bones. Not literally like an X-ray report. But deeply.Structurally.Down where strength is supposed to live.Think about your phone when too many apps are running in the background. The screen looks normal.Everything appears fine. But the battery keeps draining. That’s how envy works. You can smile. Work. Serve. Post.Encourage others. And all the while comparison is quietly draining your joy in the background.A sound heart closes the apps.It says:I don’t have to compete with what God is doing in somebody else’s life.I can participate in what God is doing in mine. The good news is that the heart can be tuned again. You are not stuck with envy as your rhythm.Gratitude can interrupt it.Blessing others can weaken it.Contentment can teach your soul to breathe again.God isn’t trying to shame you for feeling comparison. He’s inviting you into a healthier pulse.A better cadence.A life-giving rhythm.Because what happens inside us doesn’t stay inside us.And a sound heart gives life.REMEMBERA quiet heart can heal what envy keeps inflaming.PRAYERGod, tune my heart to gratitude, contentment, and joy.TODAY’S CHALLENGEName one envy trigger today.A person.A platform.A conversation.A number. Then intentionally bless that person and release the comparison before it settles into your bones.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Thanks Peabo...for your version of a Whole New World
Proverbs 3:19Yesterday, June 2nd, 2026, the world lost a voice that felt like velvet and a spirit that felt like home. Peabo Bryson transitioned, leaving us with a catalog that defined romance. Known in the mainstream for his Disney classic that defined wonder. When you hear that iconic opening flute from Aladdin, your mind instantly takes flight on a magic carpet. Peabo didn’t just sing lyrics; he vocally built a whole new world. But I remember Peabo for his legendary R&B ballads like Feel the Fire and I’m So Into You (I just sent that to my wife about 3 weeks ago just because Peabo knew how to say it just right).Reminiscing on Peabo’s ‘Whole New World’ song caused me to reflect on Proverbs 3:19 and how it says: “By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;” Notice what the verse is actually describing: Architecture. The Lord didn’t just “wish” the world into being; He used Wisdom as the blueprint. The heavens aren’t just “up there”—they were set in place with declared precision.Hey Fred Lynch! is a reader-supported publication. As a musician and a creator, I look at Peabo’s legacy and realize—we are all world-builders. Every choice you make to love, every project you start with integrity, every time you speak life into your surroundings—you are laying a foundation. But you can’t build a “Whole New World” using an old, broken map. We need a fresh connection with the Builder of Worlds Himself before we start hanging drywall on our dreams. When we align our creativity with God’s wisdom, our lives stop being just random noise and start becoming a “sought-out song” that meets the moment. Peabo showed us how one voice, aligned with excellence, could lift the “heavens” for millions. What kind of world are you building with your voice today?REMEMBER: You’re not just talking, singing, emoting or expressing random information—you’re building worlds.PRAYERHelp me participate in creating a whole new world today.TODAY’S CHALLENGEPlay a Peabo Bryson track today and notice the “atmosphere” his voice creates, then go and share that loving vibe with someone before the day ends.❤️ Proverbs Daily is a reader and listener-supported program. Stop Hitting Yourself!
Proverbs 4:29“ Befriend an outlaw and become an enemy to yourself. When the victims cry out, you’ll be included in their curses. If you are a coward for their cause in court.”Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Stop Hitting Yourself! Who wants to become an enemy to themselves? Nobody wakes up and says, today I’m gonna hurt me, and yet it happens.I grew up with an older brother and big shout outs to all the big brothers out there who grow into a protector. That’s his story now. But back in the day, man, we used to wrestle. And when we’d wrestle, my brother would pin me down and he’d grab my arms and he’d make me slap myself. And it wasn’t hard. It was just a little bit of tap, you know, just enough. It was just. Slap. Stop hitting yourself. Slap. And he would say, stop hitting yourself. Slap. Stop hitting yourself. And we both laughed because it was ridiculous-- who hits themselves? But here’s the twist... I wasn’t really hitting myself, but then I was. But the point was that he had control of my hands. But my hands were still doing the damage. Funny then. But it’s still a little sad now because once again, who wants to hurt themselves? Well, Proverbs 29:24 tells us that when we befriend and outlaw, we become the enemy of our own souls. Now, that word outlaw, that matters because it’s not just a person. It is anything that’s out of alignment with what is right. When you align with what’s misaligned, you turn on your self. It’s like handing your arms over to something else that’ll take you over... and letting it use you against you. You may say, I’m not doing anything, but silence can still move your hands. Compromise can still move your arm. Association can still move your fist. To slap yourself to hurt yourself, and the result you end up hurting yourself while at the same time your hearing stop hitting yourself. But here’s the good news. You don’t have to live like that. You don’t have to stay aligned with what’s breaking you, even if it feels easier to stay quiet, even if it feels safer not to speak up. Do yourself a favor,Come back into alignment. Stand in your truth. Somebody wise told me that once, stand in your own truth. Because the moment that you take your arms back.. the damage stops. Remember, alignment protects you from becoming your own enemy. Let’s prayGod realign my heart, so I stop working against myself. Today’s challenge observe your life today. Where have you been aligning, agreeing, or staying silent with something that you know ain’t right? Break up with that misalignment today and take your arms back.Be Wise and Be Well...peace.
