This week on BETWEEN THE NOTES, Paisan Kapitan brings together two fascinating Armenian men from completely different worlds: acclaimed writer, artist, playwright and performer VAHE BERBERIAN and successful entrepreneur GEVORK “GEORGE” SUKUNYAN. Vahe opens up about growing up in Beirut, discovering that humor could be his greatest defense, his life as a storyteller, and the health crisis that changed everything. After battling cancer and undergoing 14 surgeries in five years, Vahe found an escape through writing — including the story that would eventually become LETTERS FROM ZAATAR. Then the conversation takes a very unexpected turn. Vahe is a self-proclaimed atheist who was actually raised in a deeply Christian home and, as a child, was expected to become a priest. He explains the experiences that eventually caused him to question the existence of God. Paisan, a man of strong Christian faith, respectfully challenges his perspective and shares why his own journey led him to believe exactly the opposite. It’s honest. At times uncomfortable. But never disrespectful. Then Gevork “George” Sukunyan joins the conversation with an entirely different story. George came to America from Armenia at just 12 years old, left high school early and eventually turned a business that started with a single truck into a major exotic automobile transportation company moving thousands of vehicles every year. George also talks about family, entrepreneurship, The Reserve LA, his passion for giving back to the Armenian community — and why, despite all his success in business, one of his happiest places is still behind a grill cooking for the people he loves. Two completely different men. Two remarkable lives. And one conversation that goes places none of them expected.
