अभिनन्दनं कस्मै ?

रवीन्द्रनाथटागोरवर्यः यदा गीताञ्जलिनिमित्तं नोबेल्प्रशस्तिं प्राप्नोत् तदा शान्तिनिकेतने अभिनन्दनसभा प्रवृता । बङ्गालस्य वरपुत्रः' साहित्यक्षेत्रे ध्रुवनक्षत्रम्' ‘भारतमातुः कीर्तिहेतुः' इत्यादिभिः वचनैः तस्य प्रशंसा बहुभिः कृता । रवीन्द्रनाथवर्येण न अत्युत्साहः प्राप्तः, न वा नीरसप्रतिस्पन्दः दर्शितः । कश्चन आप्तः अपृच्छत् 'सर्वे महता सन्तोषेण आसन् । किन्तु भवान् तु स्थितप्रज्ञः इव व्यवहृतवान्' इति । तदा रवीन्द्रनाथवर्यः शान्ततया अवदत्'अद्य आगतेषु कोऽपि गीताञ्जलिपुस्तकं न पठितवान् एव । अभिनन्दनम् आसीत् नोबेल्पुरस्कराय । यत् अभिनन्दनं कृत्यै कृतिकाराय वा न स्यात् तादृशेन अभिनन्दनेन कथं सन्तोषः प्राप्येत?’ इति ।(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)When Rabindranath Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Gitanjali, a felicitation ceremony was held at Shantiniketan. He was praised with words like “the guiding star of literature” and “the glory of Mother India.” Yet Tagore showed neither excessive excitement nor indifference. An acquaintance asked: “Everyone was overjoyed, but you behaved like one firmly composed.” Tagore calmly replied: “Today, none of those present actually read Gitanjali. The felicitation was for the Nobel Prize, not for the work or its creator. How can such praise bring true satisfaction?”
