AC 10. 《河口之处(一) VI》| The River Between
from Palimpsest | 行间
River Crossing – Episode VI: The River BetweenTen years have passed. The Portuguese sailor who was once left behind as a hostage has become a translator between two worlds. The boy who once watched silently from behind his mother's clay jars has grown into a young scribe in the Kingdom of Kongo. Their meeting is no longer marked by fear or suspicion, but by shared memory and mutual transformation. This duet is not about conquest or conversion. It is about translation—not only of language, but of ways of living, remembering, and imagining the future. Neither man fully belongs to the world into which he was born, yet together they inhabit the space between cultures, where new identities begin to emerge. The music imagines a sound that history never documented but might well have existed: an early Afro-Portuguese musical language born from a decade of everyday coexistence along the Congo River. Rather than juxtaposing European and African traditions, the score allows them to grow into one another. Its melodic language draws inspiration from the simple, modal contours of late medieval Portuguese folk songs, while its rhythmic foundation gradually shifts toward the layered polyrhythms of the Kongo region. The melody carries the narrative in the European tradition; the rhythm carries the body in the African tradition. What begins as two musical worlds slowly becomes a single shared pulse.Minimal acoustic instrumentation—Portuguese guitar, viola, thumb piano (likembe), ngoma drums, frame drum, wooden percussion, and two male voices—creates an intimate sonic landscape. There is no dramatic climax. Like the river itself, the music continues to flow, quietly suggesting that history is not only shaped by kings, treaties, and voyages, but also by the countless small encounters through which people gradually learn to hear one another. Here, the river no longer separates two shores. It becomes the place where a new music—and perhaps a new history—begins.
