She is the granddaughter of the young woman who first witnessed the arrival of the Portuguese ships at the river mouth in 1483, and the daughter of the King's royal scribe and interpreter. While her father serves at court, translating between Kikongo and Portuguese and witnessing the arrival of new languages, beliefs, and trade, Nsá's own world remains rooted in the river, the grasslands, birdsong, and the rhythms of village life.She is engaged to a young weaver from a respected family renowned for weaving beautiful raffia cloth. She dreams of the day he will come to marry her, and secretly wishes to wear a necklace of brilliant blue glass beads brought by merchants from distant lands. To her, the world seems larger, richer, and full of promise.Yet changes are quietly unfolding around her. More merchants arrive along the river, more young men leave the village, and waiting slowly becomes part of everyday life for the women of her generation.Nsá's Song is a song of youth, love, and hope.
