He had set out to exchange a length of finely woven raffia cloth for a single blue glass bead—a precious gift for her wedding necklace—but was captured on the road and sold into slavery. He never returned. After years of waiting, Nsá eventually married an older and wealthy merchant who prospered through the expanding Atlantic trade, including the trafficking of enslaved people. His house filled with imported goods from Europe, among them countless blue glass beads that had once been rare and precious.Years passed. Nsá became a mother, then a grandmother. She owned necklaces beyond anything she had imagined as a young woman. Yet one day, while fastening another string of blue beads around her neck, she remembered the single bead her fiancé had never been able to bring home.The song unfolds as a repetitive narrative ballad built around one simple image: a single blue bead. As European glass beads became increasingly common in Central Africa through expanding trade networks, they gradually lost their rarity and became ordinary commodities—even currencies within the slave trade.
