Its white curves, monumental spaces, and endless skies embodied a young nation's dream of the future. Yet beneath that sense of optimism, the country was entering a quieter and more uncertain chapter. For many young people of the time, distance, silence, and separation became part of everyday life.Lúcia was born in Salvador to a family of African and Portuguese heritage. Her father worked at the docks; her mother was a schoolteacher. She grew up surrounded by the sea, music, and the sounds of the streets. As a university student, she became drawn to the social ideals shared by many young intellectuals of her generation. She did not believe in religion, but she believed in human dignity, in change, and in the possibility of a better future.In 1970, she travelled to Brasília on a photographic assignment.She entered Oscar Niemeyer's Cathedral without looking for God.She simply found herself overwhelmed by the building.Great concrete curves open toward the sky. Colored glass transforms the sunlight into blue, red, and gold.
